My son wants some closed cans less than $200. Senn HD 280 or AKG K 81 DJ, or something else?? The AKG's fold, which is good for packing, he travels a lot, goes to school back east, he's not interested in buds or in ear monitors. he probably listens to a wide variety of music from one extreme to the other.

Thanks for any advise in advance

Haven't experienced the AKG K 81 DJ, but as a college student, the HD 280 Pros did not fit my needs. They are huge (foldable, but not really portable...), not very durable, clamped my head like a vice, and just plain didn't sound good to me for really any genre.

something else - the k181djs. they sound better and are sturdier than the k81djs (likely true compared with the hd280s too). however the audio technica es-7s are smaller and don't clamp as hard, and are a real fun listen, though i'm not sure they're as sturdy as the 181s, which also isolate better (and allow you to swivel the driver away from your ear without removing them from your head).

If you do not want to spend too much money, the K518 / K81DJ are a good deal. In case your son likes a little bit more bass enhancement. And I'm sure he will...

There's a little roll-off in the highs, but overall, the AKG is quite a good bargain.

Another headphone you should at least have a glance at: ATH-ES7. IMHO much better than the AKG K81 and available for 130$ at Audiocubes.

I have the K81DJs. After listening to my friend's HD25-1 IIs, I can longer bear my K81s...damn it...I've never experienced the 280s before, but if your budget is $200, the HD25-1 IIs might be right up your alley. I see the HD25-1 IIs going for for around $200US, you'll pay a bit extra with the taxes and shipping, but I think it would be worth it. Or I could sell you my K81DJs to gather funds for my future HD25-1 II purchase. haha

OK, looks like I may have it narrowed down to ATH-ES7 or HD25-1 II, do the HD's fold flat?
And between these two which wins?
