Hey Head-Fi! I just purchased a HeadRoom Micro amp for my K701s which I know isn't the best option, but it sounded like it will work well with more than just the 701s. I was hoping to get some recommendations for a set of closed cans or semi-closed cans to pair well with the Micro within the $400 price range. I'm currently living in a room with the window type air conditioner and it's a tad loud for my 701s. The cans don't need to completely seal out sound; just enough to block out most of the A/C noise that seems to come pouring throught the 701s. Some cans I’ve looked at: Dennon 2000 & 5000, Ultrasone Pro 750, Audio-Technica ATH-W1000, and Beyerdynamic DT 880. Oh and I mainly listen to classical (orchestral) and piano; the rest is rock and some electronic stuff. Thanks for taking a look.

AKG K 271 MkII. Very good closed can for classical.

Thanks for the recommendation, I've seen the 271s around the forums as a good option a few times. Do your RS1s keep noise out any better than the 701s?

I listen to quite a bit of opera and I love my K271 as well. They don't completely shut the sound out but they do a great job of it. I hear good things about the Ultrasones for electronica, enough that I'm going to purchase the 900s to try them out so maybe you can go to a store and try a few closed cans out.

I think the Headroom Micro Amp is an excellent amp for the 701. I hope you'll enjoy it. Since the Micro has 3 gain settings it's also very versatile. The Denon 2000 and the Beyer 880 would be options to look at for closed/semi closed 'phones.

Good luck.

Save to $500, and you can try the RS-1, and on the other bass side of the moon the Pro-900.

I've been looking at the RS-1's and could only find them for $695, is there somewhere that sells them for around $500? Also, do they keep any sound out? I've been drooling over the Grado's for a while, the woodies are absolutely gorgeous. Thanks for the advice

Thanks Baka, you just put my mind at ease. I'm really looking forward to hearing the 701s out of the Micro rather than my portable, hopefully it will make a big difference.

Don't underestimate that MicroAmp!! Additionally, the RS2i is amusingly overlooked. Interesting that it's not at all considered when it's within your budget!! Everyone just likes going for the top and completely passing over all too often, the better values.

Yes, you're right. Around $500 for a used one.

That most definitely is within my budget. Do the RS2i's block any sound or are they as open as the 701s?

I'm afraid that the Grados block no sound whatsoever.

You can always suffer the heat.

Sacrifices must be made.
