I'm looking for a pair of closed headphones capable of blocking out TV/Music/People. Right now I own an AKG-701 which is only good if it's quiet and Er-6i which is great but the sound quality is not that great and it's very loud on low volumes.

My primary use for the cans will be to hook them up to my guitar amp. Not really sure if that matters. Maybe I can kill two birds with one stone here and find a good companion to my AKG-701, which I find kind of weak for rock/metal/hip-hop.

Budget being around $750 at the most. Right now I'm looking at the Denon AH-D5000. Any good?

If the D5000 are anything like the D2000 in this regard, which I understand they are, they do not block out much more sound than an open headphone.

Beyers DT770 - they are excellent at blocking out external sound, and very comfy too; i pop mine on after a hard day and slip into a world of my own.

Well, I can tell you that none of D2000, D7000 (so I assume D5000 will be the same), Pro 900 and even the noise cancelling PXC 450 block in much noise passively. Regarding PXC 450, when turn on, I noticed they only cancel some sort of noise, i.e. low frequencies such as airplane engine noise. But if there is a person talking to you, you can still hear them very neatly. If you click your fingers, you hear it too.

What closed headphones are good at is to avoid annoying people around you hearing your music (perfect for office use), but unfortunately you can hear them (sorry).

If you really want to isolate yourself, my suggestion is to go for IEMs.

Good isolating (and good sounding too) headphones:
Sennheiser HD 380 pro
AKG K271/272
Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro
Beyerdynamic DT150

A good noise isolating can is the ATH-m50. Its about $130 on amazon and is good for the genres that you listen to.

I've heard that the senn hd25-1 has good isolation. The hd 280 has very good isolation (I've actually used it a bit) but the sound signature is cold and anemic, which I don't quite like. It wouldn't fair very well for hip-hop either.
