My Equation Audio RP-15MC just died on me and I need a new pair (don't want used) of closed headphones. I don't want to spend more than $100 and I have limited experience with closed headphones.

A balanced sound without overwhelming bass would be nice. For a reference, I find the PX100, HD238, and the RP15 to be a bit bass heavy for my taste. I listen to mostly instrumental music rock/classical/jazz. Any help would be appreciated.

SRH440 and M50 are flat.

Personally, you get much better sound with open headphones.

JayB18, if you find the SRH440 or the M50 bass heavy too, maybe you can try the K-271MKll used for around $120.

There's a K271 MKII for $150 on the FS forums. You might be able to negotiate.

I am still burning in my M50's. Getting close to doing a review. I did listen to about a dozen songs today. One thing I am finding that I like about the M50 bass is it really only thumps when the song is calling for it. Other wise I think, so far anyway, that the bass is rather subtle. Present but not overbearing. If you live close to a Guitar Center, you should pop in and see if they will let you sample them. I have about another 3 days or so and then I will do a full review....but every time I listen to them so far I am more and more impressed.

From what I've read the Shure srh 440's might be a good choice. They are supposed to be pretty neutral because they are studio monitor phones. I've read a lot of people say that they are pretty light on bass.

Personally, I think this is overstated.

Purchased the Shure SRH440 for $85 on amazon. They should arrive on Wednesday. I will post impressions when I receive them.

Congrats on your purchase! Please let us know your opinion. I own the AD700s that you have, so if you consider the AD700's to be just the right amount of bass, I'd like to hear what you think of the SRH400s =)

I post a comparison to the AD700 and maybe the MS1 if I get the chance. Bass on the AD700 is sometimes (depending on music) a little light for my taste but nothing bad.
