Hi all,

I find myself in need of new work headphones. I'm looking for something closed with good bass but with decent soundstage. Does it exist and for less than $300??

I used to own Grado SR60, DT770, HD580, SRXMKIII for reference.

Thanks
Ian

Denon D2000 is well regarded in both respects, as an owner I can vouch for this. They are low impedance, but benefit greatly from a good amp. What is your signal chain at work? If you are just plugging into a computer, I can't say I would make the same recommendation.

I use audio gd Compass and it is a very nice pairing. Bass is extended (look at the charts on headphone.com), defined. If these are for work it's worth mentioning that you will be hard pressed to find a more comfortable pair of headphones, unless you happen to have an exceptionally small head. Don't know what kind of music you like, but I indulge in some dubstep on occasion and this modest system can handle low frequencies and subtle harmonics with definition and authority. I have BX-8 monitors and a Blue Sky Studio Sub for comparison and these headphones are the closest I have heard to that setup.

Ultrasone Pro 750? If that doesn´t fit the budget the 650 may be about as good regarding soundstage.

if all else fails,

Ultrasone pro 900 or Stax LA-A-A-A-AMBADA

^^
And how's that got to do with OP criteria..?

DT770 2005 have a pretty decent sounstage with a good sense of depth, No complaints in that regard. Better than any Ultrasone IMO.

Your safest Bet for both Bass and sounstage is the D2000 but you can also consider a ATH-W1000 used or a ATH-A900 that might serve you well.

Although its well under your price range, this is exactly how I would describe the JVC harx700/900.

Some ideas off my head: HFI 780, Pro 750, D2000.

I would say the Denon D2000 nails it for very close to the money. Really big soundstage for closed cans.

Is the D2000 really better then the markl D5000 regarding soundstage?

Pro 900 is still my benchmark. Dt 770 2005 edition I haven´t heard. DT 770 Pro/A900 impressed me until I got my 750. Those are not at all in the same league IMO.

I'll throw in another vote for the D2000s -- lots of bass and one of the best soundstages I've heard from a closed headphone.

As far as markl-modded vs. stock Denons go, probably my first review that I will write on Head-Fi will be to compare the D7000s to a pair of LA2000 Lites (which should be on their way here in a couple weeks). I think this will be an interesting comparison, since they can be had for about the same price and they share the same cable.
