Steel was said as chosen for its strength, when faced with those yanked off plugs studio environment. However, almost all vintage senns circa 414 came with steel cables.

i wouldn't describe the hd280 as lacking in bass, but it is a bit loose on the bottom end i guess... that could again be an "amp needed" issue (seriously doubt it) - but then again i only listened to them as i had a bunch laying around after a film shoot and needed something to fly with at the time. i haven't heard them on an amp, but i suppose if you heard them on a worst-case-scenario like a portable player minus amp, since you are hoping to drive them via the mac's headphone jack that's rather fair.

The 280s are a little loose on the bass. They sound very good for the price, but there are others that are better if you're not listening in a noisy environment.
