I'm in search of a pair of closed cans for an unamped ipod 3rd gen.
Size doesn't matter 'cause I will use them only at home.
My budget is up to $250

Thanks!

I purchased Audio Technica ATH-A900's as a home use non-amplified can, and I love them. $200 @ AudioCubes.

Closed, $250, home use, unamped, ipod: Audio Technica A900 if I had to make an universal recommendation. Unless you strongly repents its sound signature, this is a superb allround headphone that should suffice most of your headphone needs. It's comfortable, too.
The only worthy competitors to the A900 in terms of sound quality are the Beyerdynamic DT 250-250, DT 770-80, DT 660 (with 120Ohm adapter) and AKG K271. However, all of these will bring your ipod to the limits of its volume range. Depending on your average listening levels, this might not be enough.
But even when driven by a powerful amp and fed by a highend source, I still prefer the A900 most of the time. Only complaint is a slightly recessed midrange (not lower midrange, not upper midrange, but right down the middle).

Hi fl00r,

I have to agree with other's suggestion of A900 (though just sold mine

) But they are great closed headphones, when used un-amped and does female vocals rather well... I sure miss my cans already, hehe..

Best of luck,

Saint.panda and overlunge> You both recommend the AT-900 what's the difference between that and the w100's. I was looking for a closed headphone and managed to get a pair of w100's. I am interested in the AT range but don't really know enough about them.

Hi GoRedwings19,

I have not auditioned Audio Technica's W series, I have read some of the W's sounds warmer, and more colouration.A900 was a can that has performance exceeded its value (IMHO), the sound is quite echoy (without the mod) so for female vocal it gives that 'airy' feel to it.

Maybe there are others who can do a direct comparison for both.

Best of luck,
Overlunge

GoRedwings19, I would expect that the W100 or W1000 sound better but that's just a guess based on the MSRP and AT's product placement. The A900 is a nice headphone but cannot compete with the HD 650 (if properly amped) whereas I've read on various accounts that the W100 / W1000 are very capable headphones that rival equally priced open headphones.

I think the A900 is a very well-made headphone because it will sound good out of pretty much everything and will still impress out of highend systems even though its scaling capabilities will be revealed at some point.

But don't you have the R10 as a closed headphone already?

Thanks all for your reply's! I will order a pair of 900's today.

I was wondering, I use my ER4p's for on the go, what will be the difference (sound-wise) between the AT's and the ety's?

Thanks again.

Hi fl00r,

Again, I have not auditioned ER 4 series of canalphones, but I read they are big on details. I feel A900's instrument separation and sound would not be as clean cut.

Overlunge,

p.s. There are a couple of A900 on sale in the For Sale forum maybe a good way to acquire them because they will be burnt-in and for a cheaper price too.

Good luck with them. Remember to post a review.
