Hi all,
 
I have had some help over on ABI and I am now running it past you knowledgeable peeps.
 
My Bro' is an amateur musician and he going to be 50yo real soon. I am getting him some headphones that he can use when doing his composing.
 
Currently he uses cheapo Senn HD201 and I want to upgrade him.
 
He plays several Roland Keyboards plus bass pedals and does his own mixing and recording. He needs a good full range can that can handle everything from bass pedals to vocals and will work with pretty weak outputs from mixed sources.
 
So far
 
Senn HD380 pro
ATH M50 or M50s
 
And I have an olnine budget of £100 shipped, both of the above come in at around £105 on Amazon so I dont want anybody telling me DT770 pro at £160
 
I would welocme comments on how the two that I have highligted will fit the bill

Shure SRH-440, or KRK KNS 6400 ? These are within about 100 Euros with shipping. The KNS 8400 is slightly above the budget (still less than 150 Euros shipped), but is quite good and comfortable. The Shure works somewhat better with weak sources, and has a good, balanced (although slightly bright and not very extended at either end) frequency response; however, with the stock ear pads it is not as comfortable. The KRK's need a bit more power to drive, but should still work well with most sources. They also have good comfort, clear sound, and a well extended frequency response (especially the 8400), but the cheaper 6400 model is lacking in overall bass quantity.
The HD380 and M50 are also good, however. All of the above should be a large improvement over the HD201.

KRK KNS 6400. $70-80 new, it sounds just like the $150 Shure SRH-840, but with less bass impact. It's a fantastic closed, comfortable monitor for music writing.

The KNS 6400 are £89 shipped and the KNS 8400are £130 shipped.
 
Just to ask, will the KNS 6400 really out perform the Senn HD380pro or ATH M50 both at the £105 mark for music composing and playback.
 
I note that despite a 32 ohm resistance that they have 95db spl which does seem a bit low in efficiency. Some of his keyboards have a weak output and he mixes his stuff down to listen from an ipod. Will this still give him good sounds
 
I dont want to sound that I am questioning both of you fine chaps but before 10 hours ago I had never heard of them, but then again I am no musician.
 
Last question, will he get the correct impact of his bass pedals if the 6400 are considers to be bass light compared with the 8400.
 
Looking for fnall reasurance chaps, he is my bro' of 50 years and I dont want to get this wrong

Thanks for all recomendations, it looks as though I am going to spring for DT770pro 80 ohm at £132 shipped unless anyone convinces me that this is a bad move

DT770 is too colored to use for mixing, as it has exaggerated sub-bass and recessed mid-range.
