I've been using my denon AH-D2000s for a while now after replacing the HD650 with them. I can't have an open headphone because the outside noise in my living space kills the greatness of the sound. I had a chance last night to listen to some W100s I was selling for a friend and the higher end clarity made me pine for the 650s again. I don't want to sacrifice much in the way of low end like I found with the w100s (which the denons provide with ample amounts and I was always happy with the 650s bass) but am craving that senn sound.

So basically.. is there a closed can with the same sound as the 650s? and hopefully in the same price range?

I have the D2000s and while I like them.. I do think they are lesser on the scale to the 650s. Maybe I have to take the plunge into the d5000s

I believe there were two different versions of the W100's. I got this from searching some of the really old threads when the w100's had first come out. One was bass shy & the other had plenty in the low end. I owned a pair that was not bass shy & I sold my 650's for them. They weren't the same as the 650's - but filled that spot in my lineup better for my equipment & needs at the time. Later I sold the W100's in exchange for some Darth Beyers - I really like the Darth's but I wouldn't say they fill that same spot. So......after a while I missed having a can with a little more neutral presentation so I picked up some A900 ldts. and I think they fit the bill pretty well. So long story short --- maybe try some other w100's or check out the 900 ltds.

The HD650 are in another league.

Seriously, check into the HD25-1 II.
Not quite as lush as the HD650 in the mids, but more detailed due to being closed (a la, no 'veil'). They have bass very similar to the HD650. For 125$ less, they are surely worth the price. They isolate quite nicely to boot.

So yea, if you want the HD650 signature in a closed version, the HD25 is probably one of the closest and cheapest options.

My 'drew moded' darth beyers are somewhat simlar to the HD650, not as refined, and cost more.... twice as much as the HD25, so....

~Hope this helps

Well the truth is that the 650s are going to be hard to beat in their price range. Audio Technica has some very good close headphones. But at the same price range I do not think they are any better...just different. If you want a smooth headphone with good tonal balance, that out classes the 650s you will need to through a lot more $$$ at them.

Also have you looked at new cables for the 650s to bring out the highs more?

You could always have the HD 650s woodied...I was in the same boat 6-9 months ago. The Darth Beyer Closed was the only one that came close, but fell short in the mid-range. Give the Closed HD 650s a shot...6- 9 months later and I'm still considering that as an option, go figure.

Interesting. The D2000 is about $100 more expensive than the K271, both at the cheapest prices. Would it be a big step up?

I just got my D2000 and I would say that it would be the closest that I've heard to a HD650s. Even though I just got them, I would agree that they are a little different sounding than the HD650s. Since I just got them I don't want to rule in or out anything until I had at least a couple of weeks with them.

I second the Denon D2000 or D5000 as the most similar closed cans to the HD650's.

I have also heard the Ultrasone Ed 9's, Audio Technica ATH-W5000's and the JVC's...Denons are a better match.

They both have strong and week points. IMO K271S has more balanced sound, better details and tighter bass (Zu Mobius). D2000 has bigger soundstage and more than K271S and HD650 bass quantity, a tad too much to my taste. In stock form it has less then the other two details, pretty sure good aftermarket cable fixes that. Personally I am planing to Silver Dragon them.
Also isolation is tons better on K271S, if that concerns you any.

I wonder if a decent recable would clear up a little more high end and bring me closer to that 650 quality sound I miss.
