Smart move.

When manufactures proposition huge discounts on bulk buys they will not have another vender to go to.

It is like Ford and Chevy merging.

Are the chips themselves not all from the same couple of OEMs?

I'm not sure what you mean. There are many semiconductor design houses, and there are many semiconductor fabrication factories. Some companies have only one or the other, while others have both. Some companies outsource their design function and also outsource the fabrication - they are really just in the product marketing & supply chain business. Merger & acquisition in the semicon industry happen all the time. Burr Brown was an independent company for almost 40+ years before being bought by TI. Go to any of the large semicon companies, and you will see a long history of acquisitions. Many are small start-up companies that are acquired in order to add their intellectual property to the portfolio.
