Choosing hd 598, how bad is the sound leak?

Hi Accordion2214,

The HD598 are open headphones, so they leak a lot of sound. Even worse, you will be able to listen many noises from the enviroment (people talking, the car engine, etc). For the use you need to give to your headphones, I do not think the HD598 are appropiate.

Best Regards,

Daniel

Thanks for the suggestion, but they are not available in nz. Are there any other suggestions?

Well, tell us what is available there in your budget range that is a closed headphone. Much easier than us guessing :)

Got a link to a website you are planning on buying/ordering from?

These Shures are nice headphones: http://www.computerlounge.co.nz/components/componentview.asp?partid=18104
Easy to drive with a portable device (I'm guessing you don't have a portable headphone amp since you didn't mention one).

The Momentums are another good headphone: http://www.computerlounge.co.nz/components/componentview.asp?partid=20454
Similarly fairly easy to drive for most portable devices.

These Logitech's have built in noise cancellation (takes batteries):

they do let a lot of the sound in but they do not leak as much as something like Grados would.

If you're using them in public definitely get closed headphones. As much as I like seeing people with nice open Grado, AKG, Sennheiser headphones it aggravates me when they use them on the subway.

The Logitecth UE 6000 ones pointed out earlier are nice, I picked up the AKG K550 myself (perhaps a bit large for travel although I use it on the go). The Beyer DT-770 80ohm is a nice option as well. I didn't care for the Sennheiser Momentum or the B&W P5 despite both being very attractive and compact.
