Chinese (Mandarin) pronunciations

From what I know. The word "Beijing" comes from what you would call Mandarin which is spoken by the majority of people in Mainland China. As for the word "Pekin", it comes from Cantonese and is spoken mainly by people from Hong Kong and the Canton province. The reason why some languages(such as German) still calls "Beijin", "Pekin" is because a lot of western trader first made contact with China via Hong Kong or the area surrounding it a long time ago and so the word stuck until now.
