I'm trying to figure out what is the cheapest way to bypass my laptop's soundcard and get an optical out from one of the USB ports? I'm thinkinf og purchasing one of those 205.2 number crunchers, but I don't know how to get optical out from my pc.

Any ideas?

Do you have a S/PDIF out port available there?

If yes, then just get a digital converter (coaxial-->optical) (there are devices starting from ~$20 -->)

If not, then you need to get some external audio gear like one from these listed @ - http://www4.head-fi.org/forums/showp...9&postcount=25

Yes, better get an usb dac. do a search; there are tons of them around. Mine is.
