Alright, I'm poor, so don't laugh at my current setup:

- Apple PowerBook
- Built in sound (1/8" out)
- Monsoon MM-1000 2.1 speakers (cold and analytical, but very clean treble and mids, decent bass)
- Sennheiser HD-497 (these sound warm compared to the Monsoons)

No headphone amp/preamp, no external soundcard.

What's the best way to make my audio better? M-Audio Sonica USB soundcard or a cheap headphone amp? The soundcard works with both speaker and phones, the amp would help just the headphones, right? I can't plug the speakers into it...

Well, if you'd like to improve both the speakers and headphones, a better soundcard could improve both setups, or a vintage receiver with a decent headphone out.
