I have been reading these forums a while and have come to respect the opinions of many who post here, so now I post seeking some advice. I am thinking about getting a cheap receiver to use in conjunction with my computer for music and movies. Right now I am considering the Onkyo TX-SR502 or the Yamaha HTR-5730. I could get the Onkyo refurbed for 190 total cost, and the Yamaha new for about 160. Any thoughts on these or other suggestions?

I'm planning on getting one of these myself (the 50 or 70 if it matters). Any idea on how the headphone out is?

if you want to buy a receiver for both speaker and headphones, i would rather get a receiver but a cmoy or mint instead for headphone.

i recommend go for the older receivers with some reputation over the newer ones if you dont want to spend too much money. i tried the a newer pioneer receiver boasting with 96khz/24bit dac converter, 100mw per channels for 5 channels, safe to say my 8 years old harman kardron avr-55 kick its butt.

$200 after shipping and tax i would guess. this is not a receiver. its an amazing amp. it don't drive low impedance phones very well, heard it does well for high impedance.

Thanks for your comments guys.

I decided to go with the Onkyo TX-SR502, refurbed for 150 dolla.

One of the primary purposes was for watching movies, so I need multichanel support.

Now I am on a quest for some decent bookshelf speaks!

Yeah, I have the TX-SR501. I currently pair it with a couple of Klipsch RB-35 bookshelf speakers and a Velodyne VX-10 subwoofer. It sounds really good to me, although I prefer a slightly brighter sound. It's also awesome for movies, although I don't have 5.1 hooked up. The Klipsch speakers seem to pair really well with the Onkyo. However, they might make it difficult to upgrade your source in the future, because the Klipsch speakers will bring out any flaws in your system...so if they're paired with a the wrong receiver, it will sound very, very bad.
