Memory: CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB 2x512 PC3200 CAS 2,5 - 79.99
Video Card: Sapphire 9600XT 128mb - 91
Optical Drive: NEC ND-3540 DVR+-RW - 45
Case/PSU: Antec Sonata - 99 (but you get $30 mail-in-rebate)
Use soundcard, hdd and floppy from the old computer.
Total price: $425. And thats with a darned good case, 1gb RAM and a decent videocard. Expect to be able to play games at 1024x768 with settings at high/medium. You can use 120mm case fans with the Sonata, so it's possible to build a quiet computer in it. You can easily add another harddrive later if you'd like to.
Greetings!

Instead of a 9600XT get a 9800Pro instead. Less than $15 more...much better performance.

Sorry for recommending a slower card, I just checked the price of a card i knew is cheap in Sweden. If the price difference is that small, get the 9800 Pro instead.

Not For gaming? I happen to own that same exact card, and use it for Combat Flight Simulator 3, and Flight Simulator 2004, and the graphics are stunning! I have video on both at "Excellent" quality, and it is. This card is excellent for the price, and is more than this person will ever need.

You know you're right. My old integrated ATi card can run DOOM1 at the highest settings, hence it must be the best gaming solution to date! NOT
Only because that card works for you, it doesn't mean that it's any good for someone else (or that it's a good card at all).
If you wan't a cheap card, buy a 9600 instead. MUCH better performance.
A Ti4200 is a good choice if you mostly play older games:

If you don't believe me, check this review:

It even struggles with older games.
