hi guys -

i need a component cd player, and i don't have too much cash left over after all my recent purchases.

i have found a marantz cd-4000 for AU$329 (remember foreigners, aussie money is play money). is this a well-respected player? they have the 6000ose as well, and i know everyone loves it, but it's $900, and i can't afford it.

so in the cd-4000's price range, which ones do you guys recommend? will be paired with headroom supreme and hd600s.

i would prefer a changer, but i'm not willing to spend much more or give up sound quality, so i'm probably SOL, right?

thanks,
lucien

the Nad 541 and the Cambridge Audio d-500 will be in a similar price range as the CD6000. a 521 and a D-300 will be less expensive.

it's very hard to find reviews on the lower priced models tho. the reviews I found on the cd4000 and cd5000 are very mixed as well. I guess the cd6000 price range is where cdp's start getting really good.

for like 200$ the CD4000 seems like a pretty good cdp, judging from user reviews and everyone here has been raving about the denon 370 like forever. if you prefer a changer, I'd say you can't go wrong with a 370.

i got my cd6000 ose for 770 bux aussie
the cd6000 is about 600 bux aussie

i think better stay away from denon...at least the dcd-755ar. it has some hiss even at low volume for some reason out of the headphone jack

check out eastwood hifi in sydney
they can prob courier it to u

not sure yet... i just emailed him with a description of what i'm after, and asked for a recommendation. from the look of the site, they know what they're talking about, so hopefully he'll be spot on.

you know what ****s me the most is the prices we pay for stuff over here. i know the aussie [pause to remind americans that it's pronounced "ozzie", not "oSSSSSSSSy"] dollar is worth dick, but jeez.

when i see the hd600 over here for $700, and then in Germany for $179, i have a real problem trying to feel good about the australian price tag.

so i ask about a cheap cdp, and everyone comes back with something that really pricey over here. no fault of their own, it's just that we pay through the nose for everything. except mangoes in the summer.
