Does anyone use ChatGPT for Hifi recommendations? I've been experimenting with it for tube rolling recommendations, and am finding the output quite impressive and consistent with some of my subjective impressions.

However I feel like sometimes it's just "telling me what I want to hear" instead of being objective.

I use it for really detailed questions and also ask for reference links to verify the information. It's not great for some basic questions like a list of 5 volt balanced DACs though. It's really good for things that need calculations though. Even trying to find a song based on what I remember is really cool though.

Yes, whenever it needs to search the web for an answer (as opposed to being pre-trained on the information it needs to provide an answer), it will not be as good.

You should fact-check anything from a LLM.

It has no actual knowledge, just pattern recognition. Sooner or later it's going to highly recommend a tube that doesn't exist, the way it invents legal citations.

Which means you might as well just do an old-fashioned search yourself and find real references.

Haha, it already HAS recommended a tube that doesn't exist! It recommended the Tungsram "black glass" 12AU7, when I mistakenly typed Tungsram instead of Tung-Sol. It told me it's an excellent tube. :)

I regularly bounce questions and ideas about my gear, music, etc., off ChatGPT and Claude. Like all things AI, you get out of it what you put into it. The better your prompt and the more explicit your controls, the higher the quality of the output is. Using the Internet search function within ChatGPT has pretty much-replaced anything I would have traditionally Googled.

I am using ChatGPT to compare eBay listings and I am happy with the recommendations so far.

Do you provide the listings or is it recommending listings based on your prompts?
