I'm using foobar2000.
Is it better to use the volume control in foobar or the one in Windows that is labeled "PCM SPDIF" when using digital out?

I am using ART DIO. Since that is 24 bits, and my original audio is 16, I assume the PCM SPDIF just lowers the values of all output samples. What about foobar2000?

The "PCM SPDIF" volume control, if it operates like the rest of the Windows mixer, effectively decreases the dynamic range to 14-bits unless you have it set to full volume. The Foobar2000 volume control isn't the best either, but it's probably better than the Windows one.
