I'm a big fan of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto with Julia Fischer and the Russian National Orchestra.  Pentatone did a great job on the recording/mastering of the hybrid SACD.

just listened to the 30" samples on amazon. Good stuff!
I am not sure if you are familiar with Bartok string quartets. If not, you may want to give them a listen.  The Emerson's recording has lots of fire and  excellent sound.

Brahm's cello concerto is powerful.
Mendelssohn's violin concerto is amongst the best.
Joshua Bell playing Kreisler is also wonderful (violin and piano).

Elgar Cello Concerto (du Pre's is the best)
Bruch Violin Concerto
Saint-Saens Cello Concerto
Dvorak Cello Concerto

Also try some chamber music. The Tchaikovsky Souvenir of Florence is spectacular.
