Are the cd carry cases with the vinyl sleeves good for long term storage of cd's or do your dics become damaged over time when using these holders. The ones that I'm refering to are the two and three ring binder type or anything similar.

NO!

I have been using two CaseLogic 264 disc storage binders and they have scratched and scuffed my discs over time. I'm talking about minor scratches from re-organizing my ever growing music collection.

I would highly suggest that you invest in a SLAPPA CD / DVD storage solution: http://www.slappa.com . SLAPPA is a sponsor of Head-Fi so your investment is showing support for Head-Fi in no uncertain terms. While the SLAPPA storage solutions can not guarantee that you will never scratch or scuff your 5" optical discs, it does reduce the risk of doing so. Scratched discs cause all sorts of problems including playback quality, digital audio extraction, and resale value (among other concerns).

When I get a full-time job, then that will be my second audio related investment that I will make after my ModWright LLC mods.

I have about 300 CDs stored in these wallets. They are incredibly variable, I have no problem with them in general. If you are going to get some of these I suggest going for the type where you can place a finger in the spindle hole and a finger on the outside edge of the CD at the same time and pull the CD out in one action without having to shimmy it along.

HCIMan77:

Are you talking about the SLAPPA wallets or the generic 3-ring binders with the 8 page double sided CD sleeves?

I'm in agreement with Welly concerning the Slappa cases. Here is a chance to get an incredibly well made product at a very resonable price, and it also looks great, plus it protects CD's from the scratches that you would get with other similar products. That, and you can support a head-fi sponsor! Do a search for other people's opinions about Slappa and you will see that the praise is almost universal.

I mean the generic type but as I say they are variable, the cheaper ones tend to have very tight sleeves which makes it difficult to get the CDs out and I daresay is more likely to cause damage. The ones I prefer have a sleeve with a flap so that only the bottom half is held and there is less pressure on the CD. I generally do not use them for audio CDs but so far I have not had any problems that I can attribute to them.

You say you don't use them for audio cd's. Do you use them to store software disc?

Yes (including some MP3 files) and as I say so far so good

. I have experimented with many different solutions for storing CDs and all have their problems, Jewel cases are just too bulky, CD rolodex systems are too fiddly, finding specific Cds in the wallets is a pain but I guess it is my preferred compromise I have different wallets for different CDs.

I'm using a caselogic two ring binder to hold the restoration discs that come with my computer. This is a small unit that holds about 30 cd's or 15 with cd booklets. I figure that I won't be removing the computer discs from the case too often so I think they should be fine. I mainly use jewel cases for all my audio discs.
