I know, I know, there are lots of sound cards out there with S/PDIF outs, but here's the main thing: I don't need an amazing quality sound card, just the out, really. I plan on running optical into my AMB y1 (eventually y2) DAC that I'm currently building. So I guess my question is:
 
Which to buy? I don't want to spend very much money, but I still want the best quality I can get, within reason, of course. Does it really matter, so long as it has optical out? Thanks, I'm still a newbie to all of this and trying to absorb as much as I can.

I've got a Creative Sound Blaster X-FI HD. I'm very happy with it. From Dell Inspiron 14 USB to X-FI HD the digital signal is converted to S/PDIF and sent to Sony TA-E9000ES pre/pro. I also  send analog from  pre/pro tape out to X-FI HD's ADC and then to Dell's USB. This is useful for digitizing vinyl.  I have also used the X-FI's DAC but prefer the Sony TA-E9000ES digital processing receiver. At any rate, ITunes 256, and 16/44, or 24/96 .wav files sound as good to my tin ears as originals do on vinyl, CD, and SACD. This external card goes these days for less than $100.00.

No DSP rubbish, very simple and straightforward.

If yourt MB has the pin outs for spdif then just get one of these.

Can dogbert's drivers with a CMI9768 sound card do 24/96 files? I've got 16/96 working over WASAPI, but not 24 bit. I hope there's a way. If not, I guess I'll just buy a DVD Audio player.

Just do a search on ebay for spdif module.
 
Make sure how many pins your MB has (3-4) and then get one with the appropiate connector.

I thought it did, but it doesn't support 24-bit apparently.

Rough. I can still use it, so I'm alright with the purchase. Anyone know the cheapest way for me to pull at least 24 bit, 96 kHz (or maybe 192 kHz) S/PDIF out of my computer? I don't have a whole lot of files in this high of quality, but I'd sure like to be able to listen to the ones I do have.

Windows has the 24/96 functionality built in so you basically only need the hardware to allow you to do so, IE an spdif jack.

I'm also trying to build the Y1 and (eventually) Y2, is it alright if I PM you for advice/guidance?
