I'm debating whether to use capacitors of higher quality or a lesser ones with more capacity. Any thoughts?

I'd go with higher quaility, but it may depend sometimes. I once had generic Nichicon 1000uf's in the PS, but switched to Panasonic FC 470uf's. The Panasonics simply killed the Nichicons.

Hi,

I agree. I use some Sanyo OSCONs which has some massive current capability ... I think 1A or so. Many mediocre caps have large capacities but you can't draw enough current fast enough to make difference.

Where do you intend to put your caps, lan? The needs will be different depending on where your caps are, also.

I'm looking to replace this 200V 880uF cap in a digital amp power supply. I was considering Blackgate WK 200V 220uF.

Has anyone tried Panasonic FM instead of FC? Where would I get some FMs? Digikey doesn't have them.

for such a high freq operation as in digital power supply, try to find cap with the lowest impedance.. even lower than FCs.. what about Rubycon ZL series?

yes but it's just up to 16V.. ZA series is also better but only low capacities..

oh and you need 200V

that will be much harder.. you have to search hard

Well I'm done searching for today. I have been searching and am tired. How could I miss that 16V max

Yeah I have other smaller values to replace also not only this 200V 880uF one. So general thoughts are good. Thanks guys.

Hi Tomo, generally speaking I need many voltages, 10V, 16V, 25V, 35V, 50V, 200V. But my question is in the case of power supply related capacitors. More capacity or better quality.

Ian,

Better to measure voltage since the manufacturer may have used a larger rated cap (example: Melos is 120v in high voltage supply but uses 200 & 220v caps), in hopes you can expand your search. Paralleling many good caps of relatively low capacitance for high total capacitance has always worked best for me. If the 880uf cap is a filter cap I think such a drastic decrease will affect the sound more than the quality of the cap could improve it.
