CanJam 2009 Impressions

haha it was Mike's from Shure's idea...but i noticed that the pad was really different. The 440 pad was much hard, made it hard to get a good seal around the ear.

However the 880 pads were MUCH softer, which in turn molded to the ear much nicer. Was a NIGHT and DAY difference.

I think Shure is on the right track...it really does share the same signature SHURE sound, but not in a IEM.

Im considering going the 440 +880 pad route, honestly would love a closed can.

Any headphone can be used for gaming. As long as you like they way they sound.

The best sounding tapes I have come from the Tape Project. I also have a collection of tapes that were sold in the late 50's all the way up to the mid 80's. On last count I have about 300, mostly classical and jazz. These old tapes were considered to be the extreme high end. I have a couple that were made in the late fifties with prices printed on the cover of $25+.

AKG K1000's were my favorite gaming cans.

Seems that the HD800's may be replacing my K1000's as my favorite gaming cans. That is if I can figure out how to use a headset with them comfortably.

Yes I know, but there are certain headphones e.g AD700 that are generally regarded for their gaming characteristics e.g soundstage, positioning. I am just wondering the chances of Shure's lineup being one of these.

Well IIRC, jude said the 840 had a very large soundstage for a closed can, but I've also read about people saying that the HD 800 has some of the best soundstage and imaging they have heard. Then again it's 1400$ assuming you already have a amp to power it.

Oh, and personally, I can't tell much of a difference between my MS1s and AD700s for playing left 4 dead.

Yep, friendly enough to let me try them. The 840's sounded good and were very comfortable. They weren't as good as I was hoping but maybe that is a result of the meet. They weren't as bass heavy as some closed cans. However, they had more bass than say the K271 (that doesn't say much though). I was hoping that they would sound a bit more like open headphones but, well, they are closed headphones. Unfortunately, they were played out of an ipod, so it is hard for me to just how they would sound out of a dedicated amp. I may end up buying one to see how they sound out of my system when they come out (I am always on the lookout for a good closed phone), but I am not in a rush. For the price (I forget what it was but I think they were pretty cheap), these seem to be good cans to consider.

I also tried the 440 and did not like them. They sounded like a cheap headphone, kinda tinny in my opinion. I also tried the 440 with the 840 pads and in my opinion, they still sounded like a cheap headphone with way too much boomy bass. They were not my thing. I didn't try the 240 at all.

Wow... I missed a great event! Well, I was fortunate enough to go to the last 2 years' events, but just couldn't swing this one. I'm still on the fence on a Woo Audio 6SE, and am dying to hear the JH13. I'm a bit afraid to hear the HD800, as I *love* my HD650 and just don't want to like another set of Senns above my beloved go-to cans.

Thanks for the pics to all that contributed to this thread. Looking fwd to CanJam2010.
