I am thinking of either putting a retractable winder

 
 
 
or this device that winds, then pulls them apart
 
 
 
 
but I'm kind of protective about them because they weren't cheap, can either of these legitimately damage them and if yes, how so?

yes, repeated winding is bad for the copper. The winding strains the filliments.
