I did a brief comparison video although there were many things that I forgot to say.
I have three AKG K1000 now; S/N 1###, 3### and 4###.
Against the Sennheiser HD800, the K1000 is simply a more natural and enjoyable listening experience. I don't feel that the HD800 has an entirely faithful phase fidelity either.
For me, my K1000s all decimate every other headphone I've ever used. I enjoy them even more than my trusty Sennheiser HD540 Reference II.
My headphone journey is actually over now. No rational audio enthusiast who likes to listen to many different music genres could possibly be disappointed with the sound presentation of the AKG K1000. It's something very special indeed.
I also prefer the K1000. It wasn't even close for me. That said the HD800 is a very good phone, and I can certainly understand those that would prefer it.
My AKG-K1000 just didn't have the detail and sparkle of the HD800, nor the deep bass extension, although the mids were better. Nevertheless, I sold the K1000 soon after getting the HD800.
For me, saying the HD800 sounds better than the K1000 is like saying headphones sound better than speakers. Speakers have more three-dimensional (binaural) stereo imaging but typically require a lack of room interaction in order to sound their best. The K1000 is the transition between headphone and speaker, combining the advantages of both technologies.
