I currently have a Stax Classic Series 2 system (303 phones and SRM313 amp). I am wondering if there is anyway I can upgrade my phones without spending the amount of money required for Omega 2s. (I have heard the 404s sound identical to the 303s, and that the only difference is the cable)

There is nothing in particular that I dislike about my current phones...which is kinda weird in itself. I would not mind greater sonic intimacy, however, so the Grado RS1s are starting to sound appealing. My mother works for a symphony orchestra, and I frequently can sit on stage while the orchestra is rehearsing. I like that sound.

Basically, what is my upgrade route?

Your own idea doesn't seem to be a bad one, actually... I'd just recommend to check the RS2 as well, 'cause it didn't really sound worse to me, just different (and to be true, even more to my liking than the RS1...).
