I have always enjoyed what little traditional Japanese music I have heard, and I would like to expand my collection of it past 0 songs.

Just looking for some help and guidance with artist names. Thanks

Katsuya Yokoyama - flute music. Often played with Kinshi Tsuruta.

Kohachiro Miyata - flute music.

Koku Nishimura - flute music.

Ensemble Nipponia - traditional vocal and instrumental music.

Ondekoza - japanese drums. Best performers in this kind of music.

Koto - japanese drums.

Peanuts - folk and pop female-twins singers. "Folk Songs" - their best traditional album.

And variety performers of Gagaku - imperial court orchestral music.

Try Boris... Japanese, although decidedly non-traditional.

I think you may have meant "Kodo."

A koto is a beautiful Japanese stringed instrument of the zither family. And for beautiful Japanese koto music, I would highly recommend Michio Miyagi. Haru no Umi is very famous, very beautiful, and a great place to start.

Doc, I think you are correct. KODO is an amazing taiko ensemble. I have found that video and audio cannot even come close to capturing the gravity of this group. I saw them live at Zellerbach Hall.

Perhaps, but much of Kitaro output is not remotely related to traditional Japanese music. and I no longer recommend anything by Kitaro. For a more true-to-form electronic take of traditional Japanese music, try Himekami instead. The label Higher Octave has released a few compilations, for example Moonwater.
