Can accidentally turning up the volume for seconds cause hearing damage?

On my computer there is a delay in Foobar when you change the volume. The other day I accidentally turned it up way too high because it didn't kick in for a few seconds and when it did I had to pull off my headphones (DT770's out of my Zero). I have no idea how many dB it was and it couldn't have been more than a second, but I am paranoid from hearing all of these stories of how short impulses of sounds above 120-140 dB can cause hearing loss (gunshots, thunder, etc.). I had a short bout of tinnitus later that night that only lasted for a few seconds. So what does everyone think, can such an event cause permanent damage in seconds?

nope, ur headphone setup does not have the power to cause hearing damage in a short blast. even long term listening with max volume would take you a good amount of time before real damage is concerned (major hearing loss).

ringing in the ears just tells you your ears experienced trauma (a recent loud sound), and if this is the first time you noticed ringing consider yourself lucky at any age. everyone will experience Ear trauma a more then a few times in their lives, and as time goes on your guaranteed to experience ringing more and more.

where the real problem exists is when you are in a place where dangerous levels of DB are all the time without hearing protection (for example working on a rock concert for a career) or when your ears start ringing without any Trauma before hand (they start ringing out of nowhere for no reason).

relax cause there are plenty more important things to worry about in life then this, as long as you don't make a habit of putting yourself where Ear Trauma can happen. kind of like when your driving a manual car and releasing the clutch to soon when your starting out in first causing the car to die, everyone does it plenty of times but you don't wanna make it a habit.

Short burst of LOUD sound can cause hearing loss, or loss of sensitivity to certain frequencies (I know for a fact), but I would be very surprised if your headphone rig has enough power to cause such a problem.

Most probably not.
A short burst of high sound pressure certainly can cause hearing loss. Not sure your rig have the power to create create insane sound pressure though.
