Cambridge 740c -vs- Cambridge 840c, sonically?

Dec 22, 2007 at 2:37 AM Post #121 of 220
The chances of this NOT being the same person in both forums is remote. I would like to believe that it isn't the same person but the username is the same.

In this forum, the person loves the 840C and hates to part with it. They sold their Marantz.

In the Audiogon forum they do not like the 840C and they still have the Marantz.

Which is it?

I was wondering the same thing myself...summat smells here and it aint fish.

Anyway...took the plunge and ordered a Azur 840c...the ability to use as a DAC is what swung it for me...i'll be able to run my Yamaha CDR-HD1500 through it.

Daltonlanny may have had to loose his 840c from the impending situation and had not sold his 8001 yet. Maybe one of those, "Well the 8001 sounds pretty good after all" after having to send the 840 back. I see the contradiction as his hype of the 840 over both the Rega and Marantz got me going.

I only read a couple of quick comments between the sound differences of the 740 & 840. $400 for a different dac and balanced outs? What are the sonic "house sound" differences between the Wolfson and AD DACs? Anyone?

There are also a few posts from him on Audiogon praising the Cambridge 840C (search is your friend). So I think there is probably room enough in one's heart to be fond of two players (sometimes for different reasons).

Frankly, this is much ado about nothing.

It could be much ado about nothing, but given that he hasn't posted here in a while, the way it looks is somewhat suspicious. That being said, if he is happy with the the Marantz, then that's great.

Agreed!

tinder bought his 840 after reading the comments. A few have, so no harm to Cambridge. This contradiction of review should be taken (as with all reviews) as an opinion at the time. 10 people can listen to the same equipment and come up with different views. The honeymoon effect can be strong to us noobs.

His last post on Head-Fi was 12/19, so that was four days ago. Christmas is hmm...just a couple of days away. Or isn't a life outside of Head-Fi allowed?

And then there is all the positive feedback from satisfied Head-Fiers who actually bought something from him.

Again, I was not trying to trash this person. I just thought that the posts, when they were made, and the seemingly contradictory nature were rather odd.

I have read enough about this player to know that it is good and I am considering the purchase. It sounds like a good match for my tube amp. The thing that is holding me back is that I doubt that I would use the DAC inputs so is there anything out there without them, at this price point, that sounds better?

I am listening to my present so no. But in your shoes, absolutely. Great price too. Only thing, 7 days won't let you get it broken in to really hear what it can do. If you are committed to it, go for it.

The only thing is it doesn't say much at all about the product and whether it's available in black or silver. If it's legit and has a warranty, as well as having the silver model in stock, I certainly would.

Some personal contact may be required.

I also just had a thought, It is amazing how fast technology has passed my old (late 90's) Theta equipment by. There was a time when I wouldn't have even considered that a player in this price range could be satisfying.

For those who may be curious... I remember reading on the Cambridge Azur PDF brochure that the Arctic line was their highest line of cables (at about $50 a pair) and their lower lines were the Atlantic and Pacific. Well it seems now they have an Azur Reference cable only available in 0.75m length (at about $100). I imagine it's what Cambridge uses for all their Azur product testing so it can't be bad.

Wow, I didn't know I was the subject of so many posts and doubts!
I feel I need to defend myself, before my credibility is totally destroyed!
Ok, here is the deal:
I have owned or bought the following CD players this year:
Marantz SA8001 [TWICE].
Cambridge 840C
Rega Apollo
Rega Saturn
Marantz CD5001
Onkyo DX-7555
Out of all the above players, I prefered the 840C at the time, with the Marantz SA8001 a very close second.
The first Marantz was new and only had about 120 hrs on it when I sold it.
The 840C is an OUTSTANDING cd player...got that?
It was my budget REFERENCE player at that time, and I could find no real faults in its sound at all. I was very enthusiastic about its sound to say the least!
I DID INDEED have a bad family tragedy, plus, my only brother passed away suddenly from Multiple Myeloma/Amyloidosis, so I sold my balanced system along with my 840C, Marantz SA8001, and most of my home rig as well.
I basically just gave up on audio, period.
I am still very strongly stressed out and sad, but things are finally getting alittle better.
Well just over the last couple of weeks, I have purchased a fully broken-in used Marantz SA8001 [about 400 hrs.], and an Equinox 650 cable to go with my still existing HeadAmp GS-1 and Sennheiser HD650's.
I also traded my Parasound preamp for a pair of Harmonic Tech. Pro-Silway Mk3 + interconnects, to use in my headphone system.
I borrowed a friends 840C and did some extensive comparisons between it and my 8001.
Well, this fully broken-in Marantz is my MY OWN PERSONAL PREFERENCE at this time, PERIOD.
It does more things right, and less things wrong than any of the above players, IMHO.
I have never enjoyed my CD's as much as I am now with the 8001.
Maybe its a synergy with the Harmonic Tech interconnects, or more break-in time on this unit, who knows?
I do strongly feel that anyone has a right to change their mind.
Another thing, you shouldn't use any forum and someone elses opinion solely as a basis for purchasing a product. You need to listen for YOURSELF and decide.
If you all think I am a con or a phony, check out my feed-back on this site or on Audiogon.
Sorry for the tone, or for any confusion.
Have a great holiday.
