Nope, I've not ever heard any of the many versions of the K340, it's only the few versions of the dt990 I've heard.

Don't know if it will help but I have an AKG 501... and decided to buy the DT 990 to be their "alter-ego" so to speak. I think they are both good headphones but have totally different presentations and I use one or the other based on the music I am listening to.

I listen mostly to jazz and both the K701 and the K340 are great cans for it. However I have been bitten by the bug and would like to get an opinion on the DT990 for jazz. Thanks.

The closest thing I can say about the k701 is a discussion we had before I got the dt990. He reminded me about an old idea that I learned in the ear training part of theory classes, but forgot about: that often women and men hear differently. The way natural loss occurrs, the men tend to lose the highs (think of Beethoven as the famous example), and we tend to lose the lows.

That means with these kind of cans like the K701, there is the potential for men to love them, but Jan was saying his gf hated them, probably for the same reasons I would hate them. I hate that top heavy kind of sound.

So the K701, while I'm curious about what they sound like, are probably not for me. Look at the headphones I've preferred. HD650's over HD595's. Sensas over UEs, dt990's to dt880s. I think we can see a pattern.

A lot of members would call it a dark sound preference and I used to go along with that because it was a good way to describe a sound to a large group of people, but I'm not so sure I'm buying it anymore.

And this is why it's good that not all headphones go for the same signature.

I own both Grados (GS1000 & MSPro) and the beyer new DT990, but thinking to sell the new DT990 very soon because it's not fun (relatively speaking) to listen with (I listen to alot country western, classic rocks, cool jazz, chinese folk songs, anything except techno and dance music). The DT990 has a 'darker' sound compared to GS1K and MSPro (all straight out of the 0 Ohm output jack of Corda HA-2).

To me, GS1K and MSPro don't fatigue my ears for 3 hours listening session (3 hours continuosly is the most for me, I won't dare to go any longer), in fact I found them very comfortable to listen with. I used to own MS2i it did hurt my ear for these hours of listening, YMMV. For the new DT990, compared to the grados, I just don't get to tap my foot. Maybe beyer just not my cup of tea (I owned the pre-2006 DT880 before, I hate it at the same time I liked it)

Yeah, it's all about preference. I find the dt990 more honest in that it doesn't color up the sound the way the ms-1, ms2i, hf-1 did. Typical grados, you either love that coloration or hate it. ...or not. I don't hate the hf-1, I just find the dt990 more of an all-rounder.

And if you have mspros and gs1000s, then you're probably very strongly into that Grado goodness. I'm more into the Beyer goodness, and we're both using the same amp, although that's not the only thing in the setup.

Well, most of the time I use the K501 for jazz/acoustic/vocals, and either the DT 990 or Grado SR-60 for rock/techno/electronica... but I do mix it up sometimes since I like the K501 a lot. I prefer the DT 990 for punchier music with lots of strong highs and lows.
