Hi everybody, today i got a shipment with the Senn 25's Velour Pads, the 3m OFC 6,4mm cable and a neutrik 3,5mm connector. My plan was to cut the 3m cable by 1m and solder the neutrik connector to it so i can use it as a portable phone more easily. I always had troubles with soldering but i thought it cant be _that_ hard!

Well i already wasted 0,5m of cable with trying to solder it and i'm giving up, i dont want it to get any shorter

The big problem with the Sennheiser cable is that the wires inside of it aren't isolated at all! The only isolation between them is the black plastic cable itself

Is it even possible to solder that in any reliable way? I tried to use tape, tesa whatever to isolate them but nothing worked and my terrible soldering skills only make it worse

I really dont want it to get any shorter now or it'll become unusable, help!
Are there people experienced with soldering here to help out?

ps. The velour pads make it sooo comfortable! I never thought they would do that much of a difference

the wires are probably enameled, which is why you find it difficult to solder.

there is a thin coat of paint that acts as the insulation, heat your iron at a temp as high as it goes, dab solder on the tip then hold it to the very tip of the wire and wait for the enamel to burn off,

then, clean the iron tip, and tin the wire, proceed to solder, make sure that the enamel is present all the way up to the solder terminal in the connector.

do not clamp the strain relief unto the wire itseld as the enamel can scratch off and cause shorts, clamp it to the outer insulation.

happy soldering!

I feel stupid now, i kept wondering why they would color the wires in fancy red and green
