I suspect that the gauge is not really much of an issue, since the current in an interconnect is very small.

If you are doing a hand braid then equal guage will make it easier handle. Other than that, shouldn't make a big difference, though there's the same amount of current on both the signal and return so an equal cross sectional area on both lines is ideal.
