Hey guys,

I'm currently in Japan (Osaka, Kyoto, Tokyo, Hiroshima, Nagasaki) until January 9 and I was wondering if it is economical to buy any high-end IEMs?

Currently I have items like the JVC-Victor FX500 or 700 in mind. Probably not going to replace my main SM3s but good to know nonetheless.

Some friends that are also travelling with me are also looking for some stuff - possible audio-technica / Denon / Sony.

Cheers.

Japan has the biggest range of electronics, and that includes IEM's

I would imagine Amazon.jp would be a good place to start, and they do have next-day delivery service too

Well with the high aussie dollar, you'll definitely be able to get good audio gear at decent prices.

I've seen Sony MDR-1s for under 20000 Yen, which equates to $70 saving for a new release headphone.

What were you considering?

I'm considering the JVC Victor HAFX-700 (wood) earphones. I have a lack of dynamics in my collection and this particular one has piqued my interest for a while. So far I've had a browse around in Yodobashi (sic) in Umeda and Edi-On (sic) in Kyoto and they seem to only carry consumer-mid-range-level gear. (e.g. Beats, Sony Bass Cannons, AT AD700).

Looking at buying IEMs as I seemed to have overbudgeted for my backpacking trip and may have some extra money to spare.

If you are in Tokyo then Fujiya Avic in Nakano (Chuo train line) has a lot of Quality used gear, and  new.
I bought my ATH-CK10 from there, their used stuff is practically new and good value.

Also in Tokyo at Akihabara is e-earphone, they have pretty much everything there, a real head-fi treasure house, also lots of top notch used gear.

You could go to the main electronic shops Bic Camera, Yodobashi etc but you`ll be paying a premium, amazon.jp usually has lower prices but that is too difficult to arrange whilst travelling I imagine.

If you are considering this, have a think about JVC's new triple-dynamic IEM, FXZ100 and FXZ200 - both of which are only available in Japan at the moment, here is the thread
