Anyone ever built their own high quality HDD player such as the ones from this site DIY MP3.
I'm sure that you can buy a 20 Gig microdrive and someone can design a simple GUI, and basically build in a good DAC and something like a mini META.

Something like this could be a headfi community project with open source software and built by a group of builders

Fixup.net is making one, which looks to be fantastic. Xin rules over *all* the fools. Not only does he have killer amps, they're also tiny and if he could make a totally integrated, say, Ety portable front end, that would be so awesome. It would be awesome if he could take one of his Sony radio boards, his mp3 player, his 75 ohm 4P to 4S adapter and his SuperMicro amp in one portably small enclosure, that would be heaven and I'd be first in line.

To my mind, a DIY at home sort of solution would be beyond most of us here, being simply solder slingers and nothing more. Too damned much effort for a one-off project.
