Why a 5400 rpm drive? Seems like overkill and a major battery drain.

I'd agree. I spend a lot of time on an Archos forum (where hard drive upgrade to ridiculous sizes is fairly easy and regularly done) and the consensus has been that "size does matter".....but faster "hot rod" drives are a waste of money for portable mp3 players because they aren't very demanding in that way. The players have not responded any better to faster drives, and battery life takes a dive. 4500 rpm drives give all the performance that is needed.

This should be true for any mp3 hard drive portable.

Hey, I have a 60Gb Archos myself (3rd upgrade).

The reason I said 80Gb 5400 is basically because the drive's have fast transfer speeds when shovelling files to it and also with the help of fluid bearings they don't use any more juice than 4200 drives. It's a logical choice

I don't think I could be happier.

443 songs loaded, understanding the functions better - this is a wonderful player! Hell! I even tried out the FM tuner. Not bad!
