Building a new computer...please help.

Yes, it is a heatsink & fan. If you want silence then go with the Zalman 7000Cu (or AlCu if you can't afford the Cu) instead. Thermaltake products tend to be on the loud side.

Yeah, Tt can be a bit loud, but as I said, it comes with a speed controller. If you turn it all the way down, you don't even notice it. My friend usually runs his at about 1/2 power, and with a case on, it's about as loud as an average CPU fan. If you want to freak people out, though, turn it all the way up...

I have that Zalman 7000AlCu HSF unit, on my 2.8C P4. I never bothered to connect the fan controller at all, since it's quieter at full speed than a stock Intel boxed CPU cooler. And it cools significantly better than the stock Intel cooler, as well.

I agree, I have the 7000Cu as well. I wanted to run the PC just with the 7000Cu at first, its quiet as a whisper even at full speed, but somehow the PC just needed the 92mm fans as well. The heat just accumulates inside the case coz there aren't enough holes or a large intake area in my ATX case. The 92mm's are noisy as hell.....

I don't really think much of Thermaltake's HSFs with a few exceptions (actually, I don't think much of ANYTHING by Thermaltake, least of all their cases, but that's another story) - if you're going to do high-end air cooling, Thermalright is the way to go:

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...109-114&depa=1

$40 without a fan - gives you more flexibility, as you can choose what kind of fan to use - a low RPM 92mm will give you good cooling at very low noise levels. I have the Zalman CNPS-7000-Cu, and it's a very quiet and capable HSF, but were I to choose a new heatsink for my processor today, I'd definitely go with the SLK948U (well, actually I'd go for watercooling, but...)

I know you're trying to get everything from Newegg, but I wouldn't spend $43 on an SLK900 just so you can get everything together. SVC has it for $19 http://www.svc.com/thslcl.html so even paying more shipping on it by buying from them instead of Newegg will be cheaper. For $43.99 you can get the SP-97 heatpipe heatsink at SVC http://www.svc.com/thsp.html which is Thermalright's current top dog for Athlon XP chips. SVC is a very good company and I've ordered from them a few times. They also have fans and thermal paste if you want to poke around their site. I know it's a pain splitting up your order but Newegg kind of screws you on Thermalright prices and going with SVC (or even somebody else) will probably either save you a few bucks or let you choose a better heatsink.

Thanks Elec. I can get the slk900 and 92x25mm YS-Tech fan for $35 including shipping.

If i ever decide on a case i'll be ready to go...

Which 92mm case fans are you running? Vantec Tornados?

Nah, just 6 cheap fans which sounded quiet at first, but then turned out to be noisy when used together. Some I bought in a rush, some were given to me by friends. I'm thinking of Panaflo's right now.

I'm using 4 of them now, as Hong Kong's VERY hot and humid even indoors. To give you an idea how noisy they are, I could eliminate the air con noise with my e3c's, but still a bit (a tiny bit tho) of the PC fans noise leak thru.

The AXP-M 2400+ seems to be a slightly better value than the 2500+ (and some argue that the lower multipler makes FSB overclocking easier, but it's pretty much a toss up). Other than that, looks great.

Looks good to me, Shulaw. Props to your mouse choice; I've always been particular to the MX series. I like the 700 myself, since it's wireless and rechargeable, but it's also about $40 more.

GokieKS, the multiplier is adjustable on the 2500M. It is on all the Mobile chips. I've used my friends before; you can set it down or up quite a bit.

The 2500+ is apparently about 30MHz faster. Hmm, never even looked at the 2400+... BTW, there's also this, which is a M2400+, but 35 watts. This would conceivably mean less heat output, ergo, better OC'ing. One fellow said he's getting 3200+ speeds out of it, and he's had it up to 2.5GHz. That's the same as the 2500+ was doing.

Choices, choices, choices...

I briefly tried to dig up the difference between the 2400+ and 2500+ mobile chips and was unsuccessful. The FSB is the same and there's not a multiplier stepping small enough to account for the missing 33MHz (2500+ is 11x166 = 1.83GHz, 33MHz is a fifth of 166 but multipliers only go by halves). Could be a Newegg misprint but I dunno. I've heard some people say they prefer the 35W mobiles but nothing definitive. I think it's hard to go wrong no matter which you pick - I have a Barton 2500+ (non-mobile) which was manufactured a year and a few months ago and will go as high as 2.2GHz. I guarantee they've only gotten better since then
