I was just wondering where I could find parts for a RA1 clone. I will be building in a nice wooden cigar box

There is a parts list for Mouser stuff at the bottom of the DIP16AMP page. I would get equivalent parts from there or digikey.com. The DPDT and potentiometer in that list are crap, get better stuff like NKK switch and a Panasonic, so you can mount them more easily to your front panel.

And to be more authentic, 5.1uF, 400V Solen capacitors are available from Solen.ca, are to replace the 3.3uF caps mentioned in that list above. Those will cost you though, if you order just 2 you will pay a handling fee.

the practice of "cloning" a viable presently for retail sale commercial product is OK if it is for personal use ONLY and we invite photographs of your handiwork .

DIY Forum Rules, aparently you can discuss clones so long as they are for personal use only. You may be right though, ufokillerz, as i have not kept up with the ra-1 controversy.

It will be only for personal use. No worries, mods. BTW thanks for all the replies folks!

I noticed everyone is using .1 or .15uF tantalum caps in their clones, which is a good thing. However, just FYI: the original RA-1 uses some cheap monolythic caps that may appear to be tantalum to "some" people.

Actually the new rule is as follows (from the stickied thread): Quote:

Head-Fi can not afford to have any connection to such a dubious practice.
As it is an area of particular sensitivity, references to said products should not contain the name of the original (eg) Grado RA-1 Clone)

I think we're OK because the title of this thread doesn't refer to the full product name. It would be like saying "DAC1 clone". Which DAC1? The Benchmark DAC1 or the Bel Canto DAC1. Same deal here. It's a dumb policy IMHO but I think this thread is on the right side of it.

IIRC the originals are .13uF as well. Good luck finding them though... The Solen's are also very tricky to find. I had to order some from Canada. Those suckers set me back some bucks with handling & shipping & all.

It truly is a wonderful headphone amplifier though. It sounds exponentially better than the CMOY IMO.

It's supposed to be a 100K dual-log pot & 100K resistor instead of 10K. =) The tantalums are 0.12uF in the original but the value isn't too critical if you don't stray too much.
