Uses:
school (also as a storage driver)
gym
running
yardwork

Budget: Less than $70

As such I need something durable and portable.

So far I've pretty much narrowed it down to the iRiver iFP-795/895, iRiver T30-512MB, and the Samsung YP-MT6X. The iRivers have 18 mW/per headphone channel while the Samsung only has 20 mW headphone output (not sure, website didn't specify). Do the iRivers really have almost twice the output power? Would it be risky buying one of these models on ebay? Any other suggestions?

Thanks for your time,
-Jonathan.

If you don't mind 128Mb, there's a Head-Fi member selling a brand-new iRiver for under 50USD, including some extra accessories-- you can probably get the price down further since it's been on the market for a while, too.

iRiver is usually regarded to have a very dynamic sound-- myself, I prefer them over the Yepp players. About headphone output; I don't know about the iRiver, but watch that you're comparing them on the same level. Some manufacturers post the Mw rating with BOTH channels combined, some post the stat per channel.

The Samsung website doesn't specify about the headphone output. I'm going to send them an email.

Great suggestion, but unfortunately the mail-in-rebate expired today. The Muvo Slim does data storage also?

I would suggest the:

Creative Muvo TX FM.

It comes in 128kbps, 512kbps, and 1GB versions.

I like it because:

1. The unit comes apart from the battery pack and can be directly inserted into your USB port without any cables (like a key drive) and acts just like an external drive, so you can just use windows explorer to drag and drop mp3s. Very simple and no cables.

2. It has an FM receiver

3. ~18 hour battery life on a single AAA.

4. Very inexpensive compared to other quality flash players.

It's just a simple, easy to use, flash player at a great price.

I can't comment on sound quality of the headphone jack as i have never listened to one, but with a decent pair of cheap, forgiving, and good sounding portable headphones, I'm sure it will sound just fine.

I dunno if it's a price mistake, but they have the creative muvo tx fm 256mb for $8.00 plus about $9.50 shipping. $20 for a 256mb flash player is pretty good.

It's an error. I gave it a try and the order will not go through. It gets cancelled saying that some of the prices on our site are incorrect.

I would have bought them out and had a field day on eBay.
