I am considering jumping into the deep end of the pool and buying a Stax r007.  But I am on a budget so I would like to keep the amp under $2000 or hopefully $1500 on the used market.  The obvious choice is the SRM 727II.  Any other contenders I should be looking at?  I have been looking at solid state amps because I have never used a tube amp.  Is it time to get a tube amp?
 
Suggestions?
 
Should I be considering mods like the feedback mod on the 727?  Are there other options that become great values when modded?

I would try to find a used 717 for around $1000. Then save up for a LL2 or BHSE

If I am getting it rewired for 220V, should I look into any mods or is it not worth the money?

The feedback mod is supposed to be worthwhile on the 727. The 717 is a different design and doesn't need modding.
