What's a good amp for HD800s in some ~$400 range that will work for music AND gaming?

$400 used is fine.

There is no such thing as a 'gaming amp'.
Just in case there was any confusion.

Unless you count RGB... then it's totally a gaming amp.

I had my HD800S on a Sound blaster AE-9 and it has lots of power and the 5.1 mode was excellent. It needs its own 6 pin molex though and most systems below 1,000 watt power supplies just have two used for a 220w or higher draw video card. The other amazing time I had gaming was the Aune S6, and balanced xlr side has good power. Both were versatile.
I currently use an SMSL SP200 and Topping D10b DAC. The soundstage isn't the star of the show, but details are so noticable in gaming you can hear a pin drop (or footsteps) from 20 yards away in games.
