My wife is standing behind me with this stupid smirk on her face and is getting a huge laugh out of what she calls "my latest bit of insanity".


Well,I went to a RV/Truck dealer yesterday to check out a used Flatbed/Rollback tow truck that I was gonna use to tow my cars back and forth to the racetrack. I used my cousin's flatbed last year and I fell in love,those things are double-trick and work great. I went to check out the flatbed and the dealer also sells RVs and some really cool ones at that. I was all set to buy the tow truck but I had to help the sales guy move a few RVs to get to it and I took a good look inside a 2004 Itasca Spirit 30 footer and thought to myself "this is cool" and the bulb was lit. I'm sure you've figured out I did'nt buy the tow truck by now but I did buy a 24 foot enclosed race car trailer and I brought home a Fleetwood Jamboree GT Class C 30 footer and my kids are lovin' this thing. We went for a long drive in it and they don't want me to take it back. Man,I got some plans for this thing. I already see a spot to put a turntable and tube amps. This thing has a full sized stove,fridge,ovens and microwave and it has a real toilet. I can do dumpage on the road whilst my wife is at the wheel. That is so stinkin' awesome!!! This one has two large TVs and a satelite dish. You can even get Internet service on these things. This one has a slide out and a huge electric awning as well as generators and all kinds of cabinets and storage areas. You could pack this thing for a looooong road trip with the entire family. I'm gonna have to keep this thing at the shop with the trailer but I gotta get me one of these. These are so cool.

I did'nt buy it yet and I'm finding it kinda strange that dealers are really trying hard to get you to finance these RVs. I want to pay cash for it and the guy looked like he was gonna roll right there. They offered a much better deal on the final price if I financed but I'll talk to my accountant later today to see what he thinks. I been looking around at what these sell for used and they seem to depreciate a lot and it seems like the mark-ups on RVs is huge, cause the dealer has a lot of room to play with the price.

My wife says that RVs look very "Bubba" and that all I need is a John Deere hat to complete the look. I think otherwise and would just Love to pull up to your meet in my RV....wearing a Head-fi hat.

I went through this with my wife a few years ago. I wanted to get a fifth wheel trailer. I like the idea of unhooking it and being free to drive around when you get to your destination. I think the wife had visions of us sitting at the infield at Daytona watching stock cars and that pretty much killed the deal.

I don't know what it is with women and RVs. I'm tryin' to get her to buy the "there's all kinds new beds to get naked on" approach but she says that there are thousands of hotels around the world that we have'nt been to either. After I talk to the money man today, I'm buying it. The RV park ain't ever going to be the same.

I'm getting accoustomed to some of the terminolgy as well,like "grey water". That's a very polite term for sewage.


I was thinking about getting a boat at one time but all the boats I really like cost upwards of a Million bucks. I still might get one when I retire but only when I can pay cash for it. My wife really digs boats and I might have to do the boat before the RV to get her "on board",so to speak. I'll get it done somehow. She'll be one of those RV driving women you see in the TNN commercials before you know it.

My folks have a trailer, and they head south every winter and stay at various RV parks. Now my mom won't stay in a motel, she doesn't want to sleep in a bed where "God knows who has slept in".
They also park at casinos for a few days at a time. I guess some casinos have a special place for RV-ers for free.

When I was young (8-14) my Father, Brother, Grandpa and Grandpa's best friend went motorhoming twice a year. Colorado rockies, Canadian Rockies, Maine, and Florida were a few of the trips we took. My Dad used to have a ridiculous amount of money, and I think he had the first diesel Mercedes motorhome. 38 footer if I remember correctly. Before that, he had a Greyhound motorhome. All I remember about that one was the stairs that came out when you opened the door. Some of the best memories of my life. We would tow a CJ-10 Jeep behind it. My Dad is broke now, but I am planning a trip with my Bro and Dad sometime this year. I can only go as far as renting one now.
I recall:
1. Getting stuck on the beach in Fort Lauderdale, what the hell was he doing driving on a beach??!!

2. Exploding Jiffy pops

3. Driving by sketchy gun totting hitchikers

4. A trailer came undone off a truck in front of us and flew off the side of the highway at 70MPH. To this day I think if anybody was in there. (Its against the law, but at 10 years old sights like that burned into your mind forever.

I think it is illegal to dump while driving, except maybe Mexico or S. America.

I'll tell you what Tubey, as soon as you get a turntable in that RV I'll send you one of my dad's old Bluegrass records and some hayseed so you can complete the image for your wife. Hee hee, somehow I can picture you in overalls, a John Deere hat and minus a few teeth.

Whether it is Tuberollers crap or anybody elses, it is illegal to dump ANY waste (human or whatever) in public, especially on state highways.

You never struck me as an RV type Fred, but having spent some very short periods in a buddies I know you're in for a blast. The one your considering sounds gi-normous!

Oh, and I was gonna suggest (though your accountant gave you the go ahead) that you nickel and dime them, pushing the cash thing until you hit a great price to finance.

Just make sure you have it in the contract that you can make early payments. They did the same song and dance with me at Nissan and I saved almost 2 grand financing and paying for my car the first month before interest kicked in.

I'm not a big fan of Winnebago style RV's, but the new popularity of retro "tow along" Airstreams are pretty cool. The interior is nicer and more sophisticated than most people's homes.

Either way, with gas prices expected to exceed $3/gallon in California, an RV would be the last vehicle I would consider paying to fill the tank(s) up. The price of one fill up alone would cost more than most people's head-fi purchases here. (well, most people, heheh.)

Actually, a good buddy of mine used to drive me around in his parents' RV when we were teenagers. Used to be one great big party wagon, chicks and all. I shudder to think of what went on in that RV....

When I was a kid I had a buddy whose dad had a large trailer they kept in the backyard when they were'nt using it. It had a microwave in it before they had one in their house. We got so much action in that thing,that was a great time and I get a big grin on my face just thinkin' about those days. Between that thing and the station wagan I drove,I was gettin' it good.

Anyway,The dealer is being really goofy about thios whole finance thing. He acts like he does'nt even want to do the deal unless I finance. I can't remember that last time I dealt with someone who did'nt want to take large sums of cash. My accountant is looking things over and I'll likey return the beast or buy it tomorrow. I'm going to South Africa Friday for a week and when I get back I want to take a road trip in my RV.

BTW,I wasn't talking about dumping on the road guys,don't be rediculous
