I've never heard "Boys." "Breathe On Me" was the 3rd I was thinking of (good in a Kylie Minogue ripoff kind of way) but I just now remembered I forgot about the track she did with the Ying Yang Twins which was wonderful in its absurdity. So that's 4.

I'm not claiming Britney Spears is great or something. I like less than 10% of her songs after all. I just think it's silly that a bunch of people on a headphone audiophile forum are complaining that Britney Spears doesn't fit their fancy, even though it's a complete non-event because they're doing it years too late and there's not a single person in the world who would expect someone in this demographic not to have this exact reaction anyway.

Well, Factor, there are really two inter-twined threads running here -- one questioning the merits of Spear's music, and the other more of a meta-discussion of how she achieved mega-stardom in the first place. As to the latter, you may be right in that we are several years too late to either cheer or bemoan the facts. However, I would argue that a considerable time is needed to sort out who really has talent, and who was just a FOTM star. There is so much mass-marketing (getting the product to market) for each new pop star that it might take a few years to really step back and evaluate that person's musical merit.

Hey, not sure why folks have issues with manufactured pop, the stuff wears its heart on its sleeve.

To me it's much more insidious when critical acclaim is attached to artists with material 'co-written' by a producer/production team. Talking about folks like Alanis and Avril...

I had to look this up. Britney Spears was born on 12/2/81 and her first record was released on 1/12/99. It appears that she was 17years, 1 month, and 10 days old at the time of her first release.

So, for the record, I liked the way she looked on her first album 10 months and 21 days after its release date.

Why isn't there a law saying that 12 year old pre-pubescant illiterate children can't sign up for internet forums without parental consent?

Oh wait.. there is

To a certain extent I agree with you. Maybe I hang out with the wrong class of people, but I've never heard anyone refer to Spears as an artistic genius or the creator of beautiful songs... but I have heard people say they find her music fun to listen to. Her fans may, in general, be dull and shallow in their appreciation for music but at least they don't pretend to be otherwise.

Avril, on the other hand, has a much more irritating fan base full of sanctimonious self-righteousness about her "authenticity". Now I'm not saying that her music isn't (mildly) better than Spears', but I find her media avatar far more abrasive and (to be blunt) disturbing.

Pop music has always (since I've been alive at least) had a certain gleaming falseness about it... a sort of unspoken statement that the music had been corporatized, sanatized and packaged for mass uncritical consumption. A singer like Spears is more the production of mass marketing and economic models than an artist... She is Gibson's Idoru. And, most importantly, everyone knows it. There seems to be something much more insidious when this sort of artificiality starts to overflow its banks and consume an increasingly large chunk of genres.

Yeah man, i'm glad you also agree that britney has musical merit =). her stuff is very catchy too! especially "baby one more time" "oops i did it again" and of course every1 loves "toxic". i never actually saw the real britney but people at my college did mock britney concerts and her music sounds really good live. imagine how good the real britney would sound. that would be thanx.
