Brahm's 2nd piano concerto

To be honest, I don't like this concerto. The first 3 movements aboslutely rock! but the last movement just seems so out of place. We have 3 very dark and powerful movements and then all of a sudden we switch to a happy ending in the last movement? I don't get it at all.

I love that 4th movement! But I know what you mean, the first three are just SOOO deep... I think this kind of contrast is even more marked in the Violin Cto. The first two aren't quite so heavy, but they are very intensely beautiful, then the playful last movement is a letdown.

You wonder why... My guess is that he was influenced by the examples of Beethoven and Mozart here. They often finished off heavy pieces (e.g. Mozart's late minor key PCs) with lighthearted finales.
