I've been looking for cheap IEMs to use for workout, I've owned a pair of HF5 for over a year and I love them.
after reading some reviews on here I decided to go with JVC HA-FX101 and HA-FX40. While using them, I find the higher pitched notes very sharp and hurts my ears, almost as if they are cracking. I compared them against my Galaxy S3 stock headphones and even those are better. Is this because these JVC headphones are geared toward a different listening style? What's another pair of cheap-ish IEMs I can try that better fit me?

It's because you unfortunately fell for over hyped products IMO which while worthy aren't all they appear. Some products here get pushed to high heavens which I disagree with because the outcome is exactly this, new members being sucked in.

I would suggest you look into Ostry KC06 for $60. I'll give you a thread.

If not,, you cannot go wrong with SoundMAGIC E10. A review:

Goodluck.
