For closed headphones I've heard good things about the Beyerdynamic DT250, but I haven't listened to them. Just going by what I heard.

I have Alessandro Music Series One (made by Grado) headphones and love them. Great value for $99. More experience people here say Grados are best for rock and not as good for other music genres. To my less experienced ears they're fine all around performers.

I finally got to listen to listen to the Sennheiser HD 595 and I liked them quite a bit. Supposedly the most "Gradoesque" Sennheisers. They seemed a little less forward.

I also have the SR-001 from stax, and absolutly LOVE it. BTW, I also upgraded from the Bose Triport, and it (the upgrade) was one of the best audio purchases I ever made: this was what I had to say about my headset on the audiocubes website:

The Stax SRM-001 is without a doubt electrostatic to the core. I am a college student that music fortunatly plays a very important part in my life. My home system consists of Magnepan MMG's driven by Rotel equipment, great for the music that I love, such as Diana Krall, Boney James, Chris Botti, Sarah Brightman, Keiko Matsui, James Taylor, Candy Dulfer, Ottmar Liebert, Norah Jones, Loreena McKennitt, and the occasional Madonna. I know good sound reproduction when I hear it, and this headset does NOT turn tail.

I was looking for a small headset that gave me the lions share of the performance of my maggies, in a package that I could take to school with me, and sound flawless.

Those of you that are familiar with the electrostatic sound will know what you are in for, and that is a really rich, seductive, warm sound that is positivly orgasmic with well recorded material. However, unlike certain electrostatic speakers, this headset is DYNAMIC! You can play rock music on these babies, and it will sound great!

The midrange left me absolutly slack jawed. I am talking transparancy equivalent to my MMG's here! Diana Krall sounds totally dreamy through these things, AND THEY ARE SMALL ENOUGH TO TAKE WITH YOU!

Bass is full, fast, and super tight. It isnt the deepest I have ever heard, but it is deeper than my MMG's without a sub! The bass sounds CORRECT! that is the only way to explain it, no boom or overhang. A double bass sounds full and woody, while at the same time Madonna can pound. I have NEVER heard better bass performance at this price.

Treble... oh the treble...

With the proper cable (not the OEM stuff that comes with your CD player) I use monster interlink, soon to upgrade to Kimber, the highs are smooth and extended. You will be able to hear the trill of a flute, or a piano plink like never before from a small headset. Overtones will suddenly become more obvious, and as a result, the soundstage will become wider.

The only downside to this wonderful headset is: you feed it a poorly mastered recording and you will hear something you wish you didn't. All the artifacts of the processing will come out.

I can't reccomend this headset enough. I absolutly love mine. It is, IMHO, one of the best audio purchases I hae ever made.

Trust me, you wont regret it. I love mine, and listen to it CONSTANTLY. Comfort, once you get used to it, isnt as bad as some of the others will have you believe. I just finished 2 CD's and am still set for more!

To those of you who are going to compare this headset to the Ety for bass performance, it is all personal preference. I personally think that electrostatic (and planar) bass is the most natural sounding. Hence why I said I have never heard better bass from a headset at this price.

Yup, the rave review of the SR-001 is pretty much my opinion of it. I just wish the amp was better. Once you hear the flaws in it you can't unhear them, and you'll start wanting something a bit better. I'm wondering how the SR-005 system fares with the SRM-212 amp, which actually isn't half bad.

For the money, though, the SR-001's performance is stunning. You get an amp and a headphone that rivals the performance of the HD580/decent amp and is a heck of a lot more portable. I've always recommended it, but alas, not many have bought into my recommendations. The ones that did though... well I'll let them speak for themselves

But, back to topic:

I'm not sure you fared that well with the HD590's. Now, they're not bad and should blow your triports away, but they're more of a specialist phone. They have a somewhat sucked out midrange, and the treble is rather bright. They'll fare very well with classical and electronic music, but with rock, vocals will be a bit distant and guitars will be lacking in body. If, however, you choose to re-cable these cans instead of selling them, then you'll improve their SQ pretty dramatically.

The 590's are an older model and the 595's have been designed to replace them. The 590's are a bit unpopular here, but I think that's largely unfounded, and many people just aren't giving these old cans a chance. They certainly outdo the 595's in some areas - bass impact and quantity, treble detail and extension. These do pack a whallop in the bass, especially when amped!

The biggest thing with them is burn-in: they absolutely have to be burned in for at least 50 hours, or they'll sound very harsh and strident. The treble energy will settle down with continued use.
