Hello -

Im a complete newbie into this world.  I have recently purchased sennheiser 598 and a Schiit Magni to drive them.  I'm tight on funds and was wondering if I could use the headphone out on my Bose Companion 5 to feed the Schiit Magni.  Is this suicide?  Would it better just to use the headphone out on my imac until i can afford a DAC?

You'll be double amping, which is not a recommended strategy.  For a headphone amp, you want to feed it a line-level signal.  Any "headphone out" jack will be amplified, so you don't want to be feeding that into a headphone amp.

That said... yes it'll work. As long as the headphone port on the Bose isn't particularly noisy, you probably wouldn't even notice the difference. I don't know what the output on the bose is, but say set the volume at roughly 80% and you should be fine.
