Boomphones worth it?
Apr 22, 2012 at 6:43 PM Post #16 of 34
Honestly, I don't own that many pair of headphones in the same price range but when I made the review I used a lot of different headphones that people I know own. And you may be right about there being other headphones that would blow these out of the water. I based it on "style" headphones around that price range more than anything. A pair of Audio Tech headphones I'm sure would make these look terrible on sound quality. However, I compared them to the Studio Beats by Dre which as you know is roughly $300 and they weren't "that" much better and they were way more expensive obviously. So, for style headphones around that price range I would still say a 7 or maybe even an 8, but for headphones in general around that area they're really only about a 6.

I appreciate you taking the time to review the Boomphones in your opinon KKees, but when you write a review its easier to read when everythings spaced out and not packed together. lol

Yeaahh haha they didn't look quite as bad when I was writing it as it did when I posted it, but I mean it was mostly just rambling on anyways.

-BoomPhones Review-

Alright so I figured If anyone was looking into these and came across this thread I thought I'd post a review of these BoomPhones. This is going to be very in depth just a heads up and I may ramble on a bit, I don't know, read it all if you have the time though.

So I just got these yesterday so I haven't had too much time to look at them I guess but I have pretty much worn them nonstop since I got them (I'm wearing them right now). Here's my thoughts on the headphones though. To start, they are a bit bigger than I thought but they pretty much have to be to have the four speakers in them. I knew they would protrude a little bit on the muffs but the whole band and everything sticks out just as far as the muffs which isn't that big of a deal, yes they do stick out a bit but I mean it's not crazy or anything. However, I will say from the reviews I've seen with people wearing them and letting other people at my school wear them they aren't that big, for some people though it's different (like myself they're really big) When I saw other people wearing them they're still a bit big but really not a big deal, on me though they are actually really big and that may be a problem for some people, that's the number one thing I hate about these. Now, besides the size thing, they look amazing. When you have them on your neck they look legit straight up with the leds and everything, on your head they're pretty good too (unless you're like me where they look huge haha, they still look good on your neck) I mean I got soo many head turns at school with the white leds on wearing them around my neck and even more after I turned on the outer speakers and the red leds and music kicked in. People at my school love them. I mean I'm they only person at my school with led headphones, and one guy in one of my classes mentioning how he wasn't going to wear his big headphones anymore because mine were just ****ting on them hahah, he said no one else can where big headphones now, at the time there was someone else in my class with beats studios on too which says a lot as far as looks go. And then once I showed them how you push the button and the red leds turn on and the music starts playing out, needless to say everyone the room looked and everyone loves them. My friends asked me if I paid like $500 dollars for them and after I said I only paid $99 he was like, "only $399??" So as you can tell people love the looks and the functions of them and they're nothing else like them as far as that goes. On to the sound quality, they aren't the best.. but that's kind've a throw for the functions. The bass is good the solos actually have more bass I think but it's overwhelming and not good, these have a much nicer bass. But, if you're a total basshead and you want tons of bass (More than whats good if you ask me) then these might not live up to your expectations, these personally are a lot better though its a very good controlled bass. Now the main thing about the sound that gets me is they're a little bit flat, so unfortunately the hiphop setting for eq on my ipod as well as most eq settings, doesn't cut it, I would say for the best overall setting the R&B eq is best. However, if you really want to up it so it's not nearly as flat then choose the treble booster setting that's what I have going most of the time. The outer speakers now are pretty dang good they don't "boom" like a boombox they're not that loud but they are plenty loud I only leave at like half volume when I'm walking the halls and they will fill any room with good sound just like a small ihome system. Next thing is how comfortable they are, let me tell you, they are VERY comfortable one of the most comfortable headphones I've ever worn, still though after a few hours your ears will get red and become a little sore nothing ten minutes of air won't fix. Because they are so big and have as much comfortable padding as they do, they can be a bit hot. Durability, these are VERY durable and of course they come with that case but I mean these are built x10 better than beats and a lot better than some other brands I just used beats because of how common they are. Noise cancelling, these are not noise cancelling headphones, but they do surprisingly well I mean I have a pair of actually noise cancelling sennheisers and they don't do **** compared to these. So there it is my review I know its long but if you read all of it I really hoped it helped you if there's anything I left out just post and I'll let you know.

-Below is the Basic Review-

Review is based on headphones in the price range

Durability: 10/10
Sound Quality:
  Inner Speakers: 7/10
Outer Speakers: 10/10 (For what they are, basically a small iHome system type of speaker set up)
Comfortability: 9/10 (They only reason they lost the 10 is because of how hot they can get, which has nothing to do with the speakers, wires, etc getting hot themselves)
Style: 10/10 (Unless you happen to have a smaller head, which you might, I didn't know I did lol. They will still look great on your neck, they'll just be really big on your head)
Functions: 10/10 (LEDs & External Speakers)
Unique: 9/10 (I feel like they stole the red/black idea from Beats By Dre, but overall they took it and did better so.. doesn't really matter. They're basically ****tin on Beats)
Noise Cancellation: 7.5/10

-Bottom Line-

Are they worth buying? Yes. I only paid $112 total for these but that was a rare occasion. They normally cost $179.99. For me, if I didn't get the deal I wouldn't have bought them I don't think they are quite worth $180. Maybe just because I was looking for better sound quality. But here it is, if you can only afford one pair of headphones and these are $180, don't get them, if they are at some sort of deal price for around $100 get them. If you have a collection of headphones and can afford that then I would say go for them even if they are $180 they are definitely worth having, they'll be like nothing else you have in your collection. And with the LEDs and external speakers they know how to please you friends. I personally will be keeping these for when I'm hanging out with people but soon here I'm going to by something lower profile and better sound for when I'm just cruising through my classes.

This review was very skeptical. When i do my sound quality, i make sure i go over Highs, Mids and Lows. Lows are bass, I'll give you an example:I gave XB500 LOWS of 7.5/10, because it was so overpowered that the speakers start to shake and distort the sound much like a subwoofer, just because it’s loud doesn’t mean it’s a good bass. For the MIDS i gave 5/10, the presence of vocals were just too far away. I use vocals for MIDS, because in fact that’s where most males vocals and bass female vocals occurs. Ask yourself, do the vocals sound like they’re singing right on your ears or about 5 feet away? Do they sound lively/bright? For Highs I gave around 3.5/10, compare the clef, electric guitar, and other instruments that are considered high EQ (really bright, high notes, female vocals such as higher pitch vocals generally).

For a good comparison I have compared my ATH-M50, WS55, CKS77, CKM50, V-moda M80, JVC marshmallow, Radius Atomic Bass2 for sound quality. NEVER EVER EXCLUDE low end IEM, because you’ll be surprised that some of higher priced IEM sound worse than the lower priced IEM in some range.

Also Use variety of Music genre. I personally use classical music (orchestra which has the entire range combo that we hear in music) or anything orchestra, rock, rap, pop, ballad, R&B etc.

Sound quality to audiophiles are the clarity, details, but most importantly, when you listen to a music you should feel like you’re actually there in the very front seat row.

A good set of headphone should let you separate instruments in your head.

I would then collect all the scores and average it in terms of mean. In my Case it was 5 and 1/3 out of ten for overall sound quality.

Hopefully you can use this as a review tip. I will try the boomphone and review them.

Hi Prismfalsh,

May be you can also mention at what ranges os the EQ do the highs and lows occur.

I based my EQ by how i edit vocals, instruments etc. Usually if i want more bass/strong Lows i use 500hz and down, which is mostly around 160hz for me and for highs i use around 6.5khz to and up, but mostly i use 6.5khz and 7.5khz for hi EQ, However if you wanna get really technical it really varies. For a review it's unnecessary hmmmm....i don't know why i put the EQ range for the review. I'll edit right now; For general EQ range, you could use range of piano and hear the differences.

Hey prismflash I just realized I've been talking to you on youtube about your video that included the audio technica ws55 hahaha. That's crazy my youtube username is Ronin77123. I did look over all these things you mentioned I just gave a more consumer focused review than audiophile, something someone just entering would understand.

Hmmm....ok! Thanks....that helps! I generally listen to "Open your ears" album before I write something...gives me a pretty good idea :p :D

Really enjoyed your review, I happen to have a collection of headphones and Funny enough I have 2 pairs of Boomphones. One pair that I got at Rogers From Canada for 169.99 which was polished Black and then I got Matt Black ones through some european website called Boomphones Phantom for about $200. The Matt Black ones have different sound quality from the pair I got at Rogers. Seems like they made some changes. I use headphones everyday and out of all the headphones I have, I use my Boomphones 80% of the time. People stop me everywhere asking me who makes them and where they can buy them, Once they see the external speakers they go Bananas.  When I work in the studio I use Grado PS-500 Professional, Those are great studio headphones. If you own beats, you are overpaying and getting ripped off.
Overall I would say Boomphones are worth 200. Anything under $200 is worth it. I use them for so many things. I even use them as a speaker phone around my neck while im boarding.
Try using the Boomphones with an electric guitar. You can use them as an external amp. I just wear them around my neck and shred on my guitar. These damn headhphones are so hard to find. I highly recommend them.

If you need professional headphones then you should just get a headphone like Grado or Sony. Regardless you should have a Boomphone. It does something completely different.

Hope this was helpful to anyone who is looking for headphones.

Boomphones Phantom sound waaaayy better then the Beats SOLOs. Take my word for it. They are more durable, They sound better, They look better, You got built in battery that you can re-charge. Unlike beats if your battery dies you can still use Boomphones as a Passive headphone,  and OF COURSE you tap the button and got external speakers. Beat That!

Ah yes I realise boomphones has released their new matte version but I didn't know that the sound quality was different that really makes me want to buy them, however I'm going to be buying a smaller pair of headphones next. I loved my boomphones and I took great care of them, I mean like perfect I put all the money I had into them, but them some ass in my class broke them. So sad.

Interesting review, I found it useful anyways just to hear your personal experience using them.
I recently got some V-MODA crossfade M-80's, and like mingamo has said, they're hella durable. I saw an ad for these, and so had to check out reviews. I'm pretty happy with my M-80's, and don't think I could bring myself to buy boomphones so soon after buying the m-80's, especialy as since I have the option of M-80's, I couldn't bring myself to use the boomphones as the sound quality seems to be lesser. Then that leaves me buying them only because they look flashy and have the external speakers. As I carry around a good value $40 (got it on sale for 20) bluetooth speaker, they really don't seem worth it.
V-MODA's design has the looks, and the bluetooth speaker is plenty loud and has pretty good sound quality and battery life for 20 bucks.

Anyone have any big redeeming traits about Boomphones? I like their idea as I love sharing music, I was hoping they had actually good sound quality, I might have bought them..

These are toys. They are good for the young dude who want to impress his friends at school. Honestly, when will these be usefull? Certainly not to power up a party in your basement. You want to share your music with people around you? All iDevice and Android have built-in speaker. Sometimes there are reasons why certain types of things never existed before!

I know they're not the best sound quality but I mean they're still pretty good for starter at least. I mean I know sennheiser, and other companies like bose even make better headphones even for the price. But I just loved the features on it and I heard they were super comfortable. Plus I mean they were only $112 total brand new. And I know it will be a definite step up from my skullcandy right now. I just liked them and I figured it wasn't a bad place to start. I almost bought a v-moda lp used (but only once or twice according to the ad) off ebay for about $40. Almost. But then I bought these. I'll be getting them this week and I can post my review about them maybe. But I also just joined this forum now simply because I wanted to respond to this thread hahah.

oh my god why did you not get the V-Moda's over this?
