Blueroom Minipod Speakers

they are supposed to sound pretty good (no real bass). but you've gotta figure that you're paying a lot for the design and even though the funky design may help with the sonics, the money would be better spent on drivers

if you decide to get them i'd recommend the parts express budget sub....one of the few cheap subs that isn't boomy sounding

some other nice speakers that you might wanna consider are...

speakerpage.com k05b11....they offer some very deep bass for a cheap bookshelf speaker and wouldn't need a subwoofer like the blueroom minipods....they only get up to about 95db though...amazing speaker for $140 prebuilt

another excellent bookshelf would be the ascend acoustics cbm-170...it's a bit more $ at $328 but it really holds its own against most sub $1000 bookshelf speakers

lastly....the M1 bookshelf speaker is very nice for $300...

I've read nothing but positive reviews about them, with the concentration on the praise being twofold: (1) free from "boxy" colouration; (2) designed by former B&W people (I.E. so they get it right, not just some weird startup getting praise for some whacky unorthodox design that just sounds "different" -- there was some serious thought put into the design). I say go for it!

EDIT: I remember reading the same thing about the bass -- but no more than any other speaker, so I would try it without the subwoofer first, to see if you truly miss the bass.

I'm intending to build myself a true subwoofer eventually, but I've got a makeshift one right now, so that's not an issue, I may go for these

Have you heard this sub? I've been thinking about getting it for my 'modest' home theater. The price is certainly right. I drug home a 8" Infinity Primus this weekend - which is okay, but it doesn't move me. Of course, I live in a condo (on 2d floor) and don't want to disturb the neighbors!

i have the older partsexpress 10" 100 watt subwoofer that was discontinued due to amp problems. from what i've read this sub is very similiar in performance to the one i have with the only major difference being that it tube ported (not sure if that is the right terminology) rather than slot ported like the one i have.

my sub easily beats out the other well regarded budget subs that i've heard like the sony sa-wm40

edit: oh yeah...it's built very solid! 35lbs!

thanks princeclassic. I think I'll try it. DE-J915, sorry about the intrusion!

I was actually thinking about building a monster based off of 2 12" Alphasonik PSW812 subs, which are about 200 bucks each, I'd probably get a 270W P.E. amp to begin, but get the Keiga 1kW amp later on, since it rocks your house

, a nice complementary system I'd believe, I think it'd make up for the lack of bass in the bluerooms
biggrin.gif
, that sub would definetely rape the blueroom one

can i ask why you want to use the Alphasonik PSW812's?

for $125 each...you could get the Adire audio 12" Shiva which seem to be a better driver by the specs....greater excursion

they don't look nearly as fancy though

the PSW812s spl rating is 83.8 db/w (i think...german website)

the shiva's rating is 87.2 db/w

which basically means that you'll need over twice as much power to get the psw812s up to the volume levels of the shivas

edit: how bout the stryke av-12? looks cooler than the psw812s in my opinion...also is more efficient (even more than the shiva) and 23mm of one way excursion!

From Alphasonik Website (USA)

PSW812
12” ALPHA 800 SERIES SUBWOOFER
135 oz. Double Stack Magnet
Rated at 900 Watts RMS
92dB Efficiency
Frequency Response of 28Hz to 500Hz
Dual 2 ohm 2 1/2” Voice Coils

You weren't looking at the same thing, I guess, the 812s are 92dB/W @1M

I could've sworn that Xmax was in both directions, but I guess I'm wrong

, and they're basically a rip of the MTX 8000 design.

I wish you could buy Velodyne Amps, I mean, 1250W normal at 95% efficiency, it's rediculous!!

This is the kicker:

Model Number
DD-10
18 Hz to 120 Hz +/-3 dB
DD-12
17 Hz to 120 Hz +/-3 dB
DD-15
15 Hz to 120 Hz +/-3 dB
DD-18
14 Hz to 120 Hz +/-3 dB

pretty amazing numbers, and unlike the infrasubs these subs can actually push these realistically!!, 18Hz is amazingly low for a 10"er.
