Just got back from a casino (mohegan sun). lost a ton of money playing blackjack. the worst part is that i never gamble, didn't even want to go, but just tagged along and kind of got sucked into it. i tried to prepare and read a bunch of websites on basic strategies to use and generally how to play "smart." we planned to spend about 3 hour there. i figured i would gamble a little bit, watch and look around the rest of the time. maybe i would win a little or lose a little. didn't figure anything else would happen. but things worked out much differently.

i lost ALL of my money (at least what i had on me which was a decent amount) in the first 20 mins we were there by losing 10 of the first 11 hands of 21 (what awful luck!). i never had a chance. almost every hand i started out with 12-16. i told myself this was a mistake, i never should have come, and i was done for the night. there was one problem though. i still had 2 hr. 40 mins to kill. for about 40 mins i walked around and just watched but everywhere i went i saw open seats at tables. before long i was at an atm machine withdrawing another hefty sum.

with this amount i was down and up, but never even for the night. with about 5 mins to go before i met my friends to leave i had enough so that if i bet it all and won i would actually be even or close to even on the night. at the time i was having a decent string of luck with the cards and so bet it all. the amount i put down was about 5-6 times what the other players were betting. the dealer noticed the large hand and gave me a personal "good luck." i get dealt a 19. a decent hand. but the dealer had an ace showing, so my heart fluttered a bit. he asked if i wanted to surrender (give half my money in case he had 21). i said no. i was all in. he checked. he did not have 21. one bullet avoided. he flipped over his card and then dealt himself another. he was now at 15, a very favorable hand for the betters. more than a 50 percent chance he would bust on the next card, giving me the win. he gave himself another card. it was a 5. he had 20. i had 19. the hand was over and i lost yet again everything i had on me. a terrible night and truly the last time i will ever gamble.

people got any other stories, miserable or lucky.

My one rule in going to casino, never withdraw money from ATM during your stay.

I always bring some money to gamble from home and won't take any money from the ATM since IME if I do withdraw the money, I'm still in losing streak and will end up lose them again so better of calling it a day. Yeah, losing money in casino sucks.

That sucks. BlackJack is not the game to play, why didnt you go to the poker room?

Also, doesnt it make you pissed that the money that you lost could have gone to headphones?

Of course this happens. If you look at Vegas, how do you think they afforded those incredible buildings?

Casinos are designed for people to lose money. I still enjoy casinos once in a while but I rarely gamble. I go see concerts there because a lot bands play there like in Atlantic City and in Vegas and I also go to enjoy the food as well. I love the restaurants at casinos. If you keep that in mind, then casinos can be fun and you won't lose money.

In my life time, I lost about a few hundred dollars from light casual gambling over a course of about 10 years maybe. However, I have stayed for free at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City 3 times with free food, drinks and entertainment because of a family friend who gets comps. So in the end, I'm actually on top since the place is very expensive.

yes. this is one of the first things i thought of. it's amazing how with money i almost always think about it in terms of equipment - what i could buy with that sum or put it towards. one way to know whether or not you are an audiophile.

Ugh, that sucks. My grandfather once went to a casino, lost a ton of money and changed his remaining cash into small coins. Afterwards he went around with his huge bag of 'winnings' and told everyone, "Look how much money I made! I'm rich!"

It's great. My dad goes to casinos all the time, sits and plays the penny slots for a few mins, then leaves. 2 days later he will get a complememtary stay in a crazy suite along with free meals n such. He does this at every nice casino in Vegas, and loves it.

Here's all anyone really needs to know about gambling. The house wins big time.

BTW, show me a blackjack player who can play well enough to allow the house only a 0.5% edge, and I will show you a loser.

i walked out about even in Vegas.

it was my first time playing a real Casino (not the local boat junk) in Vegas so I was nervous and the Dealer seen it. my friends and i kept going back to the dealer and we all started talking and B/Sing about life and how to play and stuff. Dealer looks at me and says "you want to know the three secrets of playing in a casino?" I was like yeah..tell me
"first Dont ever drink while you play, not one drop of anything but water..not even soda. it will change your attitude and either make you cocky or antsy. second dont play to win, play small and play to enjoy and kill time. you'll loose when you make big hits most of the time cause your changing your thought process. Third is Casino always win so dont bring a credit card nor a ATM card..Never!" well that's not the exact quote but you get the point.

i think i was down a few hundred at that moment but I listen and by the end of my trip i walked out about even (maybe $50 loss, maybe $50 won) but i killed a lot of time! i means hours on the day! i had a ball and kept going to that Dealer just to B/S. I won a lot when I went in the mourning after an entire night of clubbing, I got in the $5 table at 9ish and played till 3pm and got really ahead to recoup my loss from way before. the table changed to $10 in but i kept in at $5..ha
chilled at the pool for a hour and started drinking this really fruity and sweet drink..
then i thought "i wanna watch.." then "i want shoes" then...etc etc and lost my credit card balance so fast its not even funny..

anyway I think i am going to cry myself to sleep now.

it was a mistake to lose so much. but it's hard to just sit around in those places and do nothing - i mean not play when everyone else is. i wasn't going to be lame and say we shouldn't go there and i wasn't going to be lame and just not go out. there is no moral to this story, except maybe leave the credit at home (or have better luck).

the only way i will feel better is to be thrifty for a little while, to try to make up for my poor judgment.

ah well. it's just money (i try to tell myself).

My parents lost $3-400 at slots today. (Foxwoods) It was mostly my dad; mom and I were breaking even most the time.
